The Role
The LA Local is looking for a social media producer to build and manage our Inglewood and South LA social media presence. You'll be the creative force behind how we show up on social platforms, translating our community-centered journalism into engaging, platform-specific content that resonates with residents and builds trust over time.
The producer will use social media to build community connection and civic engagement, amplifying the voices and stories that matter most to Inglewood, creating space for conversation and helping residents see themselves and their neighbors in our work.
You'll collaborate closely with the Inglewood and South LA editor, reporters, our multimedia director and our head of audience & membership to shape social strategy. You'll create original content series that feature diverse community voices, package stories from our site and newsletters for social audiences, engage directly with community members in comments and DMs and keep your finger on the pulse of what people in Inglewood and South LA are talking about and how they like to consume content.
This position reports to the Inglewood and South LA editor, with a dotted line to the head of audience & membership.
The Organization The LA Local is a nonprofit startup that produces neighborhood-level, community-centered news that connects with broader regional issues. Our approach combines dedicated community newsrooms with a central hub that amplifies local stories, identifies cross-community trends, and produces region-wide coverage that matters to all Angelenos.

Key responsibilities
Package and publish content across The LA Local's Inglewood and South LA social accounts, adapting written stories, newsletters and partner content for platform-specific audiences
Create short-form vertical videos, graphics and other engagement-focused posts using tools like CapCut, Canva and mobile editing apps
Appear on camera to deliver news content and community stories in accessible, conversational ways
Film, edit and produce video content from community events, interviews and newsroom activities
Develop recurring content series that highlight diverse Inglewood voices and create opportunities for community participation
Engage authentically with audiences in comments and DMs, moderating discussions and facilitating meaningful conversations
Identify and build relationships with local content creators, community organizations and trusted voices for ethical partnerships and collaboration
Cultivate sources and story ideas through social listening and community interaction
Represent The LA Local at Inglewood community events and gatherings
Monitor which platforms and content formats are resonating with Inglewood audiences
Track analytics and contribute insights to daily and weekly reports on audience growth and engagement
Collaborate with the head of audience & membership to refine platform strategy based on community needs and behaviors
Contribute to editorial planning and social content calendars
Work closely with Inglewood and South LA reporters and editors to ensure social content reflects editorial priorities and community needs
Collaborate with high school reporters and provide guidance as needed
Share learnings and best practices with social producers across other LA Local neighborhoods
Support newsletter production and other audience-facing communications as needed
Requirements
3+ years of experience creating social media content, ideally in news, media or community-focused organizations
Strong portfolio demonstrating creative, engaging social content — especially video — that connects with specific audiences
Proficiency with mobile video editing tools (CapCut, etc.) and design platforms (Canva, basic photo editing)
Comfortable appearing on camera and comfortable in community settings
Excellent writing and editorial judgment, with ability to adapt tone and style for different platforms while maintaining accuracy
Deep familiarity with social media trends, platform best practices and emerging formats
Genuine interest in Inglewood and South LA and commitment to community-centered journalism
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small, mission-driven team
Flexibility to occasionally cover evening or weekend community events
Nice to Have
Connections to or lived experience in Inglewood or South LA communities
Experience working with community organizations or grassroots initiatives
Bilingual skills (Spanish particularly valued)
Understanding of or interest in journalism ethics and trust-building practices
Compensation and Benefits The annual salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications, ranging from $70,000 to $85,000. Salaries reflect our compensation philosophy of market competitiveness and pay equity. All candidates receive a first and best offer in line with our market, recognizing their education, training, years of experience, and level of expertise.
