The Telegraph is looking for a US Reporter who can cover breaking news and also bring in exclusive stories as well as features and dispatches. They should be confident working across online platforms to ensure The Telegraph has the best US coverage. The US Reporter must be comfortable filing stories to tight deadlines, running live-blogs and also writing at length when needed.
They will work closely with the US news editor and the rest of the US team, as well as with foreign news editors and other news reporters and specialists across the Telegraph.
Key responsibilities
The US Reporter is expected to provide high quality, accurate coverage of breaking news events, either through live blogs or often fast-turnaround news stories
The stories should be clear, concise, and in house style
The US Reporter will help cover events such as elections, court cases, natural disasters and national and global politics
They should also develop stories and build contacts across a range of subjects
They will be expected to provide a regular stream of ideas for original journalism and stories of their own
They will be expected to meet tight deadlines and to organise their schedule around the demands of the newsroom
The US Reporter is expected to have an understanding of the stories which attract readers online and that readers and subscribers to The Telegraph are interested in.
Experience working as a reporter for a national newsroom or equivalent is essential
Strong knowledge and understanding of US politics and current affairs is desirable
An ability to write clear, accurate copy is essential
It is essential that candidates are able to process large amounts of detailed information quickly and accurately
It is essential to be highly organised and able to work on multiple projects simultaneously while effectively prioritising different tasks and meeting tight deadlines
It is essential to be a strong verbal communicator, who is able to explain stories succinctly and clearly to editors
Knowledge of how best to present stories online is desirable
