Harford County Public Library offers a competitive compensation and benefits package. Starting wage, depending on candidate qualifications, is between $48,908 and $59,918 per year. Position Summary The Graphic Designer designs and produces art and other materials for all library publications and publicity media while maintaining the library’s brand.

Essential Duties

Designs and produces art for all library publications and publicity media including but not limited to illustrations, newsletters, ads, brochures, letterhead, booklists, billboards, calendars of events, annual and seasonal reports, flyers, web and social media;

Designs full color art for appropriate special programs;

Develops visual/graphic portions of special campaigns as directed, including design of special logos and print materials;

Develops library signage;

Design and build library floats for parades;

Proofreads, writes and edits copy as needed;

Scans, edits and takes photographs for print materials and the web page;

Maintains computer and hard copy files of art work;

Operates equipment involved in material production, including laminating/mounting machine, paper cutter, etc.;

Maintains mailing lists and produces labels;

Attends outreach events;

Assists with setting up displays at expos.

Standard Functions

Serves on committees and participates in workshops, seminars, and training as requested;

Represents Library at various outreach activities, as needed;

Notifies Supervisor with suggested ways to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of personnel and procedures and system-wide goals and objectives;

Learns new skills and technologies to retain proficiency in areas of expertise;

Is dependable and punctual;

Maintains a positive, friendly, and cooperative attitude and provides consistent customer service;

Upholds all library policies and procedures as defined in Harford County Public Library’s Policies and Procedures Manual;

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in graphic arts or related field;

Three years or more job-related experience;

Or equivalent combination of technical training, education, and/or experience;

Computer experience including graphic art software (Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat);

Ability to work day, evening, and weekends hours.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of marketing department practices and procedures including grammatical, proofreading, and copy editing skills;

Knowledge of original and computer-generated art production and design;

Knowledge of layout principles, aesthetic design concepts, color theory, branding and typography;

Knowledge of social media platforms;

Ability to multi-task, prioritize and work on several projects at one time and good attention to detail;

Ability to operate relevant computer systems, including hardware and software, and office machines;

Ability to think outside the box and problem solve;

Ability to consistently create new and stimulating designs;

Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment;

Ability to work as part of a team and meet deadlines;

Ability to be adaptable, flexible and patient with customers and staff;

Organizational and planning skills;

Strong communication skills, both verbal and written;

Basic math skills.

Work Environment

Work requires occasional physical effort in handling of light materials, up to 30 pounds, in non-strenuous work environment. For example, moving materials both within the department, including working on the library parade float, and in preparation for out-of-system events including set-up of tables, chairs, and display apparatus.

Requires sitting and use of computer and keyboard for extended periods of time.

Observes safe work place practices with uncluttered workspace, including office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, proper lifting techniques and following fire regulations.

Ability to travel to branch/outside locations, as necessary.

Reporting Relationship This position reports to the Marketing & Communications Director. Does not supervise staff. May supervise volunteers.

Work Week Primary work schedule consists of weekday shifts, but may occasionally require evening and weekend hours.
