Your Opportunity The Civil Designer works independently and as a team member on a wide range of projects including water, wastewater, public works and commercial development under the guidance of a Senior Engineer/Project Manager. A Civil Designer performs a variety of tasks which may include investigations, analysis, calculations, preparation of drawings, exhibits, construction documents and CAD. The role is intended for highly experienced CAD operators with independent design experience, or for Engineers in Training (EIT) with prior experience and a high level of CAD proficiency.
Your Key Responsibilities
Perform and assist with civil engineering design and preparation of construction drawings such as layout/geometry, grading, drainage, paving, water and sewer utilities, and erosion control on site developments including commercial, public works, schools, housing projects; water and wastewater utility and treatment projects; and heavy earthwork, marine, and military infrastructure projects.
Assist with investigation, survey, and condition assessments of existing site features, utilities, mechanical and electrical systems in support of project development.
Assist with preparing complete submission packages, supporting calculations, engineering reports and quantity and cost estimates for project entitlement and construction documents.
Assist with preparing permitting related applications and perform agency follow‑up/coordination during the review approval process.
Participate and assist with consultant and project team coordination.
Prepare concept design and perform study phase activities, including project research, existing site constraints, assessment of project feasibility, and provide input to project team on civil engineering related issues.
Utilize technologies in development of three‑dimensional models of civil systems, terrain modeling, and utility networks in environments such as AutoCAD Civil 3D, REVIT, and GIS.
Organize and maintain a digital file sharing database such as Bentley ProjectWise and/or Autodesk Construction Cloud and similar.
Facilitate and ensure the quality of the drawings and graphic work produced for the team.
Check own work for quality assurance and quality control on projects and assist with facilitating overall project QA/QC.
Assist in the development of new standards, enhancing production workflow, and refining design details.
Work to meet project schedules.
Civil Designer may have opportunity to assist with construction contract administration, inspection, and construction support activities.
Civil Designers meeting the education and testing requirements for Engineer in Training (EIT) will be working in responsible charge under professional engineers as they work toward professional engineering licensure.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
Experience with design and drafting for site development and infrastructure projects.
Experience with roadway, utilities, airfield, port, military infrastructure.
Experience working with multiple engineering disciplines in a team environment highly desirable.
Experience with water and wastewater conveyance, pumping, treatment systems and associated mechanical, electrical, controls equipment highly desirable.
Strong understanding of civil engineering concepts and ability to effectively communicate ideas to others.
Excellent experience and proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D. Proficiency in REVIT, GIS, ProjectWise desirable.
Understanding of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
Knowledge of civil systems, means and methods, materials, construction practices and industry standards.
Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting to provide creative and critical input.
Possesses excellent time‑management skills.
Ability to manage document production, multiple projects, and deliver on task assignment deliverables, schedule, and budget targets.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Accountable self‑starter who can work independently and with teams.
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
Possess a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Ability to travel as required, including rural Alaska. Estimated travel: 5‑10%.
Education and Experience
Minimum of Associate’s or Technical Degree. Bachelor of Science (B.S.) in Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related degree is preferred.
4 years of CAD experience.
Engineer in Training certification not required; however, the position is open to EITs who meet the CAD experience requirements. Work will be applicable to EIT professional engineering licensure requirements.
Local (Alaska) project resume and experience strongly preferred.
Construction experience desirable.
This position has flexible working arrangements for the right candidate that may include the option of remote, hybrid or in‑office options, however, there will be requirements for in‑person collaboration with your team members on a weekly basis.
Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
