Under general supervision, provides professional customer and information services through reference interviews, research and bibliographic instruction, technological training and assistance, and promotes the library’s collection and services through classes, events, and other programs and activities. Reports to the Library Manager or Library Services Coordinator.

Responsibilities

Conduct reference interviews and research, ensuring customers receive the most complete and efficient resources.

Create and maintain supplementary information files such as bibliographies.

Instruct users in the use of the library catalog, electronic resources, and library equipment.

Assist with public computer and technology use.

Process circulation requests and maintain accurate databases.

Refer customers to community and governmental agencies as needed.

Provide staff and volunteer training.

Plan and coordinate classes, events, and special programs.

Develop and maintain the collection, including rotation and shelving.

Prepare statistical and financial reports for reference, public usage, and program participation.

Ensure safety and security of the facility, including alarm activation.

Maintain electronic bibliographic records and catalog updates.

Monitor reading trends and anticipate patron needs.

Handle technical problems and implement new hardware/software.

Perform related work as required.

Qualifications

Combination of higher education and/or 5 years of experience, with at least 1 year in a library setting or related customer service field.

Valid driver’s license.

Knowledge of library routine and procedures, bookmobile operations, OPAC, and various informational materials.

Proficiency in data entry, typing, and general office equipment.

Ability to use standard library methods in bibliography, circulation, and reference services.

Strong communication skills, both oral and written.

Capability to maintain statistical records and prepare clear reports.

Ability to interact courteously with patrons and the general public.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues and supervisors.

Proficiency in using office machines, computers, and library reference materials.

Effective expression of ideas and adherence to established procedures.

Knowledge of city-specific reading requirements and geographic area.

Mathematical skills for basic calculations and record keeping.
