Citizens to Elect Rick Larsen is looking to hire a full-time Communications Director. Reporting directly to the Campaign Manager, the Communications Director will be responsible for building and maintaining relationships with local media, proactively facilitating media opportunities, managing the campaign website and developing new content for it, and managing and growing the campaign's social media presence. Duties are outlined below.
Position Responsibilities Media Relations
The Communications Director is expected to build and manage a database of media contacts for the 2nd District and beyond. They should build relationships with reporters and proactively look for opportunities to highlight the candidate's message.
Materials Development
The Communications Director will assist in drafting materials for the campaign, including but not limited to endorsement questionnaire answers, press releases, responses to media inquiries, responses to inquiries from local leaders, social media posts, quotes for the record, and printed materials as appropriate.
Onsite Staffing
As needed, the Communications Director will be available to travel in‑state with the candidate, staff weekend or evening events, and attend team meetings. The Communications Director will always be on the lookout for communications opportunities while staffing the Congressman such as photos, videos, testimonials from supporters, and local flavor to add to messaging. The Communications Director will also pay close attention to the Congressman’s speeches and remarks and adapt campaign messaging to match the Congressman’s language.
Social Media Management
The Communications Director will lead social media engagement for the campaign. This includes drafting and posting content, building and executing a grassroots and paid social strategy to expand social media reach, monitoring accounts for needed feedback and response, and flagging inappropriate content or areas of concern for the Campaign Manager.
Web Management
The Communications Director will be the lead manager of the campaign website. Responsibilities include drafting and editing content, uploading media materials and event details, and maintaining the media archives.
Citizens to Elect Rick Larsen is a collaborative environment. The duties outlined above will be the core duties of the Communications Director; however, an "all hands on deck" mentality is expected to find success in this organization.
It is expected that any member of this team participate in the field program in a meaningful way. Goals and targets may be set on an appropriate scale for each member of the team including, but not limited to, doorbelling, phone banking, attending community events, and being a full member of the Get Out The Vote stages of the campaign.
Qualifications
College degree or equivalent in communications, journalism, public relations, political science, or a related field or 3–4 years experience in a related field with communications experience required
Ability to work collaboratively with a wide variety of people
Superior organizational skills with attention to detail
Superb written and verbal communication skills
A self‑motivated worker
Flexibility and a willingness to accept new assignments and challenges
Flexibility to work beyond normal working hours, as needed
Desired Qualifications
Familiarity with NGP Van and the Washington state voter file
Familiarity with Google office suite
Familiarity with the Washington state political climate and the 2nd Congressional District
Relationships and demonstrated work history with the Washington state and 2nd Congressional District press corps
Requirements
Access to reliable transportation throughout the district
A modern smartphone capable of recording high quality video and pictures
A laptop capable of basic photo and video editing, as well as email and video conferencing software
Additional Information This position will require extensive travel within Washington's 2nd Congressional District and the surrounding areas.
