Position Summary

Staff Nurse I is accountable for patient care using the Nursing Process and Relationship‑Based Care model. The role encompasses direct patient care, patient outcome improvement, and interdisciplinary teamwork within the Arthritis and Kidney Clinic.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Complete orientation, unit‑specific competencies, and develop/up‑date patient plans of care.
  • Collaborate with the healthcare team, verify orders, and document accurately in the electronic medical record.
  • Engage patients and families for educational plans and support.
  • Recognize symptoms, prioritize, and respond to changing patient needs.
  • Delegate tasks per the Illinois State Nurse Practice Act, and provide support and feedback.
  • Demonstrate commitment to UI Health values through teamwork and effective communication.
  • Participate in research to enhance treatment protocols.
  • Teach patients and families about treatment expectations.
  • Provide emotional support and distress screening during treatment.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Professional/Leadership

  • Advocate for patients, families, the community, and the nursing profession.
  • Integrate evidence‑based research, standards of practice, and clinical experience to provide quality care.
  • Use acuity tools and scheduling tools to facilitate optimal staffing.
  • Support shared leadership as the chosen method of nursing governance.
  • Enhance job skills and maintain licensure, BLS, and other certifications.
  • Assume Charge Nurse role when assigned.
  • Provide and receive performance feedback.

Organizational

  • Adhere to UI Health’s Code of Conduct.
  • Treat all patients, families, staff, students, and visitors with respect and dignity.
  • Follow time, overtime, and attendance policies.
  • Complete electronic learning modules within the assigned deadline.
  • Comply with TB, flu, and fit‑testing requirements.
  • Escalate or resolve patient‑care problems using established channels.
  • Identify recurring practice issues and participate in problem solving.

Education / Research

  • Collab‑orate with other nurses for positive learning experiences.
  • Serve as preceptor and resource to nursing staff and students.
  • Use UI Health intranet/Outlook for policy updates and communications.
  • Support unit‑level and system‑wide research efforts.
  • Engage in continuous professional growth by identifying learning needs.

Reporting Structure

  • Work independently within the scope of nursing practice while receiving coaching and feedback from the Director/CNCII.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Eligibility for RN licensure from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR and required unit‑specific certifications.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate computer skills and ability to become proficient in the EHR.
  • Excellent attendance, interpersonal skills, and work history.
