Job Description

Position Salary Range: $55,000-$60,000 per year; DOE.

The assistant editor works closely with the Issues staff to support all editorial tasks, including producing and promoting articles on the Issues website; copyediting and fact-checking essays for publication; assisting with podcasting and event production; and helping with social media efforts. There is a great deal of room to grow and learn new skills in this position, which is a key part of a small editorial team that collaborates on a wide variety of tasks to continuously improve the quality, scope, and reach of the publication.

The assistant editor produces articles for web publication on issues.org; this includes preparing and scheduling pieces, optimizing for search, assigning DOIs, and promoting articles on various social media channels.

The assistant editor copyedits and fact-checks articles for the quarterly magazine, following the Chicago Manual of Style and the Issues style guide, and works closely with the managing editor on other tasks related to editing, producing, and promoting Issues. The assistant editor contributes to audience development efforts and outreach for events and assists with research for podcasts, copyright permissions, article assignments, book reviewers, event participants, and more. Finally, the assistant editor reports on web analytics, audience metrics, and other efforts to maintain and grow Issues’ readership.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

The assistant editor should have experience working with Microsoft Office and Adobe InCopy and InDesign; knowledge of web content management systems such as WordPress; and experience with newsletter platforms such as MailChimp and Substack.

The assistant editor must be extremely attentive to detail, sensitive to the nuances of language used by experts, and have a discerning eye for arguments and facts that seem out of place. The editor must be able to handle mundane but essential tasks while also experimenting with novel efforts to engage and grow audiences for the website, newsletters, podcast, print journal, and events. The editor should have experience in copyediting and the ability to follow the Issues style guide when working on articles written by experts in various fields related to science and technology.

The assistant editor needs to be good at time management and committed to communicating clearly with colleagues, authors, and partners at the National Academy of Sciences and Arizona State University. The editor must be able to work independently with minimal supervision, handle multiple projects at the same time, and be a stickler for publication deadlines.

The assistant editor will work on a variety of editorial tasks, including print and web production, copyediting and fact-checking, communicating with writers and audiences, doing interviews for events and podcasts, helping with SEO and social media, and assisting with artwork permissions and research—as determined by the managing editor and editor‑in‑chief. The editor should be comfortable in a collaborative atmosphere, able to work with the entire editorial team, and be willing to learn and take direction from other editors as well as authors. This position will involve on‑the‑job training and opportunities for formal training as well.

The assistant editor will gain experience in both print production and digital publishing and will be able to grow and to take on new tasks and responsibilities. This is a great position for someone interested in launching a career in publishing, journalism, policy, or academia.

The ideal candidate will have an interest in science and technology policy, as well as an awareness of the various institutions—government, universities, industry—that power science and technology innovation in the United States. We seek someone who is energized by Issues’ society‑focused mission of “providing deeply informed, highly accessible, challenging yet constructive contributions to public discussions and democratic decision‑making that can enhance the contribution of science and technology to the creation of a better world.”
