Job Description

The Film Studies program at Weber State University seeks applicants for a tenure‑track Assistant Professor position. The qualified candidate will focus on elements of production to support growing demand for hands‑on instruction in narrative and/or documentary filmmaking and storytelling. Our program requires a faculty member experienced in multiple facets of filmmaking including directing, digital cinematography, editing, and post‑production effects. This new hire will be integral to implementing the recently revised curriculum and preparing students for careers in the film and entertainment industries. We desire a candidate who demonstrates a strong commitment to undergraduate education and the needs of a large student body in the context of a dual‑mission public university.

Our Film Studies program is relatively new, vibrant, and growing. Now in its fifth year, the program serves over 80 majors and more than 30 minors.

Job Duties

This tenure‑track position involves a 12‑credit‑hour teaching load per semester. Our preferred candidate will cover filmmaking production courses at all levels of the curriculum from introductory and General Education classes to the program’s capstone studio/seminar, including the following courses:

  • FILM 2200: Fundamentals of Film Studies (General Education)
  • FILM 2280: Introduction to Film Production
  • FILM 2820: Special Topics in Film Studies (variable)
  • FILM 3010: Pre‑to‑Post Production
  • FILM 3280: Directing for the Screen
  • FILM 3310: Editing and Beyond
  • FILM 3780: Survey of Documentary Cinema
  • FILM 3820: Advanced Special Topics in Film Studies (variable)
  • FILM 4700: Film Studies Capstone
  • FILM 4120: Careers in Film and Entertainment Industries
  • FILM 4860: Film Internship

Start date: July 1, 2026, and classes begin in late August.

Minimum Qualifications

  • MFA or Ph.D. in Film, Cinema, Media Studies or a related field
  • Expertise in narrative and/or documentary production (directing, camera, editing, sound)
  • Experience working on professional sets and producing completed films

Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in SFX / Practical effects, After Effects, Sound Design, or virtual stages
  • Producing and budgeting knowledge
  • Experience with and/or knowledge about fundamentals of animation
