Position
Hourly Librarian (Full-service Library System) – City of Glendale, CA
Unclassified, non-civil service hourly position. Competitive hourly wage based on qualifications.
Salary & Work Schedule
Hourly wage ranging from $35.55 to $46.46, determined by candidate qualifications. Work may include days, evenings, weekends (Saturday and Sunday). Hours can vary week to week based on operational needs. Location and department assignment may include Adult, Circulation, Children’s and/or Teen Services, MakerSpace and SoundSpace at Central Library, branch libraries and Bookmobile.
Essential Functions
- Deliver exceptional customer service across all library areas.
- Assist patrons of all ages with information access, library resources, circulation, and financial transactions.
- Design, develop, and deliver virtual and in‑person programs for children, teens, adults, families, and intergenerational audiences (storytimes, author talks, STEAM activities, maker workshops, gallery exhibitions, recitals, trainings).
- Manage cash funds, process transactions, reconcile accounts, and perform calculations.
- Possess depth of knowledge in children’s, teen and adult services, collection management, cataloging, local history, arts & culture, and emerging technologies.
- Represent the library in public forums (school visits, classroom talks, orientation sessions, tours, community events).
- Provide reference and research assistance.
- Assist with library collection organization and presentation.
- Coordinate and manage library events and specials, including rentals and set‑up of meeting rooms.
- Support facility maintenance functions and track service requests.
- Order, receive, and invoice library materials.
- Conduct inter‑library loans, searches, bibliographies, and maintain materials.
- Attend professional meetings, conferences, and stay current on trends.
- Participate in staff meetings and system planning sessions.
- Maintain records, statistics, and prepare reports.
- Track inventory of office supplies and complete ordering forms.
- Supervise clerical and part‑time staff when needed.
- Provide mobile outreach services, including vehicle use.
- Collaborate on library projects, budget monitoring, and procedural input.
- Assist in long‑range planning.
- Publicize services via Internet and social media.
- Lead staff or act as “Person in Charge” to ensure patron and staff safety, including supervision and hiring support.
- Perform related duties as assigned or required by circumstances.
Minimum Requirements
One year of progressively responsible experience in a library setting or related field. Experience in a public library is preferred.
Experience & Preferred Skills
Bilingual skills in Armenian, Spanish, and/or Korean are highly desirable.
Education
Master’s of Library Science (MLIS) from an accredited institution. Current students may apply if they can complete the requirement within six months of employment.
License / Certification
Valid Class C California driver’s license.
