The Specialized Collections Librarian provides leadership for developing and assessing the CCBC Libraries’ customized collections, including circulating print, Lit Picks (leisure reading), specialized periodical, and the Library’s special collections and archives. Responsibilities include planning and evaluating the three campus libraries’ book and print collections; preparing budget analyses and recommendations; and coordinating collection activities with academic school liaison librarians from all campuses. The Specialized Collections works closely with the E-Resources and Discovery and Cataloging and Metadata Librarians. The Specialized Collections Librarian is responsible for developing a robust strategy for the cultivation and management of a balanced library collection as well as for setting collection development policies and goals and implementing ongoing collection assessment.

The Specialized Collections Librarian also provides reference service on the information desk, participates in formal and informal information literacy instruction, and serves as a liaison to a CCBC academic school for collection, instruction, and outreach.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and evaluate book and print collections of the three campus libraries.
  • Prepare budget analyses and recommend funding for collections.
  • Coordinate collection activities with academic school liaison librarians from all campuses.
  • Develop and implement a robust strategy for cultivating a balanced library collection.
  • Set collection development policies, goals, and ongoing assessment.
  • Provide reference service on the information desk.
  • Participate in formal and informal information literacy instruction.
  • Serve as liaison to a CCBC academic school for collection, instruction, and outreach.
  • Facilitate and support student learning of information literacy by developing and providing clear and effective instruction using traditional and technology-based instruction.
  • Collaborate with classroom faculty to plan library instruction sessions aligned with course objectives and assignments.
  • Conduct reference interviews and consultations.
  • Create research guides and other print and digital learning objects and teaching aids.
  • Serve as a library liaison to one or more academic departments.
  • Staff information desk, including opening, evening, and Saturday hours.
  • Participate in collection maintenance projects and collection development.
  • Communicate effectively by responding to e-mails and phone calls in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and develop professional expertise through ongoing professional development or scholarship.
  • Collaborate with department by completing and submitting reports and documentation in a timely manner.
  • Attend and participate in committee, departmental, College and School meetings.
  • Provide College and Community Service through collegial and individual initiatives.
  • Coordinate collection selection, acquisition, and deaccession of CCBC library’s physical information resource collections, including books, media, serials, with academic school liaison librarians at all campus libraries.
  • Serve as primary selector/approver for majority of physical and/or firm/direct acquisitions for CCBC libraries.
  • Support liaison librarians in the collection management process.
  • Serve as lead for library’s Special Collections and College Archives.
  • Develop and update collection policies and prepare collection statements and reports.
  • Supervise, train, and evaluate staff in acquisitions and special collections.
  • Recommend acquisitions budget allocations and spending plans to the sr. Director of Library Services.
  • Monitor budget to ensure appropriate flow of resources relative to the fiscal year cycle and annual collections-based plans.
  • Evaluate library resources in response to college curriculum and program changes, and to accreditation initiatives.
  • Identify, plan, and coordinate implementation of modifications to collections and formats with library team.
  • Support liaison librarians' participation in the collection management process.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association accredited institution required.
  • One year experience with special collections or archives required.
  • One year experience with management of subordinates required.

Preferred

  • Two years relevant experience, professional academic library experience preferred.
  • Community college experience preferred.

Compensation within the posted range is determined by a candidate's education level and/or years of experience in the field. Generally, employees are hired in the lower third of the scale.
