Job Summary

Public Library system in DC requires Children and Teen Librarians to provide professional service to children ages 0‑12 and teens ages 13‑19. The incumbent supports the operational efficiency of the library and creates a welcoming environment for young patrons.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide reference assistance, child‑reader advisory, and information about library resources to children and their caregivers.
  • Maintain outreach contact with schools, community organizations, and non‑profits in the branch neighborhood.
  • Plan and conduct programming for Children’s and Teen audiences in collaboration with other staff.
  • Schedule and facilitate weekly Youth Services Working Group meetings and required training.
  • Manage the physical collection for Children’s and Teen materials using established weeding, acquisition, and usage analysis procedures.
  • Establish community partnerships that align with library’s strategic goals and community needs.

Children’s Librarian—Specific Duties

  • Provide reference assistance and reader’s advisory to children (birth–12) and caregivers.
  • Maintain contact and outreach to local schools, daycare centers, preschools, elementary and charter schools.
  • Plan and conduct programs for children and caregivers based on system requirements.
  • Serve on DCPL working groups, committees, and task forces related to children’s services.
  • Manage the Children’s collection, applying weeding and acquisition protocols.
  • Establish community partnerships aligned with strategic goals.

Teen Librarian—Specific Duties

  • Provide reference assistance, reader’s advisory, and information about library resources to teens (13‑19) and their families.
  • Maintain contact and outreach to local schools, job corps programs, and nontraditional educational settings.
  • Plan and conduct programming for teens and their peers in collaboration with staff.
  • Serve on DCPL working groups, committees, and task forces related to teen services.
  • Manage the Teen collection, applying weeding and acquisition protocols.
  • Establish community partnerships aligned with strategic goals.

Education and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA‑accredited graduate program.
  • At least 1 year of specialized, direct, in‑person experience working with Children and Teen populations.
  • Experience providing excellent customer service to children, adults, or teens.
  • Experience designing, promoting, delivering, and evaluating public‑facing programs and services.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment in applying policies, procedures, rules, or regulations.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite; familiarity with SharePoint, Drupal, or similar content management systems.

Residency Requirement

Applicants must be bona fide District residents at the time of application and present 8 proofs of residency maintained for 7 consecutive years from the effective appointment date.

Enhanced Suitability Screening

Enhanced suitability screening involves background checks, traffic record check, consumer credit check, drug and alcohol screening.

Working Conditions/Environment

Library offices and meeting rooms are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated. Work includes occasional evening, weekend, and coverage during busy periods.

Other Significant Factors

Schedule: rotating shifts may involve evenings, weekends, and busy period coverage. Appointment type: Career Service Regular. Promotion potential: CS11. Salary range: $62,158 – $70,102.
