Miami Country Day School (MCDS) seeks a passionate and forward-thinking Lower School Librarian & Digital Literacy Specialist to inspire a lifelong love of reading, curiosity, and responsible digital citizenship in our youngest learners.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & TASKS:

The Lower School Librarian & Digital Literacy Specialist plays a vital role in nurturing PK3–Grade 5 students as joyful readers, critical thinkers, and responsible digital citizens. Blending traditional librarianship with developmentally appropriate digital literacy and media education, this position supports students in learning how to explore information, engage with stories, and navigate the digital world with confidence and care.

Working closely with classroom teachers, specialists, and academic leaders, this role helps shape a cohesive and inspiring Lower School learning experience.

What You Will Do

  • Design and teach engaging weekly library classes for PK3–Grade 5 students that promote inquiry, creativity, and a love of reading.
  • Implement instructional practices aligned with AASL standards that foster independent reading, ethical information use, and curiosity.
  • Create rich learning experiences through storytelling, author studies, genre exploration, and multimodal resources.
  • Lead developmentally appropriate Lower School curriculum in digital literacy, digital safety, media evaluation, online kindness, and early digital citizenship.
  • Partner with teachers to thoughtfully integrate technology tools that enhance learning while reinforcing healthy media habits.
  • Curate, manage, and continuously refine a diverse, inclusive, and developmentally appropriate print and digital library collection.
  • Collaborate with school leaders to support families through parent workshops focused on reading development, balanced technology use, screen time, and online safety.
  • Provide professional learning opportunities for faculty around literacy, digital citizenship, and instructional best practices.

Qualifications

  • Believes reading and inquiry are foundational to lifelong learning.
  • Understands how young children grow as readers, thinkers, and digital citizens.
  • Brings warmth, creativity, and intentionality to instructional design.
  • Values diversity, inclusion, and representation in children’s literature and media.
  • Communicates clearly, collaborates generously, and exercises thoughtful professional judgment.
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science, Education, or a related field (MLS/MLIS preferred).
  • 3–5 years of experience working with early childhood and/or elementary-aged students.
  • Familiarity with AASL, ISTE, and Common Sense Education standards.
  • Knowledge of children’s literature, early literacy development, and developmentally appropriate instructional practices.
  • Experience or interest in educational technology, instructional design, or digital media integration.
