ASSIGNMENT
We are looking for a motivated, dynamic colleague with a broad view on classical studies to strengthen our education and research capacity in later Latin literature (medieval and/or early modern period). At Ghent University, the study of Latin literature, alongside Ancient Greek and several modern European languages and literatures, is housed within the department of Literary Studies. We teach Latin literature from the classical period through late antiquity to the Middle Ages, the humanist period and the later periods. Ghent’s thriving Latin studies are part of the departments of Literary Studies, History, Linguistics, Philosophy and Moral Sciences, and Archaeology. Four research groups are actively cooperating in various specialisations: GIKS (Classical Studies), GCLA (Late Antiquity), Henri Pirenne Institute (Medieval Studies) and GEMS (Early Modern Studies).
We are looking for a colleague with a strong academic CV and international visibility in the required field.
The position, funded by the Special Research Fund, is granted the privilege of focusing primarily on research for a period of 5 years. During that period the teaching load will be limited to no more than 8 ECTS credits per semester on average over a period of 3 years. You conduct innovative and internationally recognized research in the field of Latin literature, with a focus on a late period (medieval and/or early modern).
Academic education
You lecture various course units in the broad discipline of Latin literature and in particular the literature of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. In addition to Latin Literature at the bachelor’s and master’s level, your teaching duties may, in due course, include bachelor-level courses in cultural studies (the Latin tradition in Europe), theory and practice of translation, or language and reading skills.
Institutional and societal engagement
Based on your expertise and experience, you will contribute to the university's operations and take on external assignments. You participate in the internal and external service activities of the Department of Literary Studies, the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy, and Ghent University.
PROFILE
Knowledge/experience
- You have already conducted outstanding scientific research in the field of Latin Literature, as evidenced by high quality research output in national and international publications (journals and/or books) with a double-blind peer review.
- The focus of your academic expertise lies in later (medieval and/or early modern) Latin literature, but you also work from a broader perspective and possess excellent knowledge of theories, methods, and debates in the wider fields of Classical Studies and Literary Studies.
- You are capable of initiating and supervising educational and research projects and of acquiring the necessary funding for this.
- You possess proven teaching experience and skills aimed at developing and strengthening academic competencies in university students.

- If you don't know Dutch, you are willing to learn it. This will be assessed during the selection interview. When taking up a teaching assignment, you must master the language of instruction of the course. More information about thelanguage requirements and appropriate language guidance at Ghent University.
- You are required to master the language of instruction in which you will be teaching a course unit at CEFR level C1. You can demonstrate this by means of a language certificate or a diploma obtained from an institution where that language is the medium of instruction. In addition, Article II.270, §1 of the Higher Education Codex stipulates that: (i) within two years of appointment, you must master the Dutch language at least at CEFR level A2; (ii) at the time of confirmation in tenure, or at the latest within five years of appointment, you must be able to demonstrate proficiency at CEFR level B2.
- Recommended are:
- Proven expertise in coaching BA and MA thesis students.
- Proven expertise in supervising research and/or coaching Ph. D students (commensurate with the career stage and the opportunities provided in previous appointments).
- International mobility, among other things thanks to research stays at institutions external to the one where you acquired your highest academic degree.
- Positively evaluated experience in provided or organised academic lecturing (commensurate with the career stage and the opportunities provided in previous appointments).
- Professionalisation of education.
- Academic services within and beyond the academic community (e.g. science communication, membership of advisory boards, peer review, …).
- You are quality-oriented.

- You are constructive and open to collaboration with colleagues, including colleagues from other disciplines and departments.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION
(docent – BOF TT)
- We offer you a temporary appointment in a tenure track system for a term of five years. If positively evaluated by the University Board, the term of office will be transferred into a permanent appointment as an associate professor. At that moment the time devoted to research, education and institutional and societal engagement may be altered.

Ghent University emphasizes the qualitative assessment of academic performance. Therefore, candidates are asked in the application form to mention their most important academic or non-academic achievements with the most impact.
For shortlisted candidates, the following steps in the selection procedure shall consist of at least:
- a selection interview in which the vision and planning regarding education, research, and institutional and societal engagement as well as the embedding in the bigger picture are discussed;
- a trial lesson on a subject in the relevant field;
- a screening of leadership.

- You hold a thesis-based doctorate or a diploma or certificate that is recognized as equivalent (article V.20Codex Hoger Onderwijs ). Upon evaluation of a foreign (non-EU) diploma, a certificate of equivalence may still have to be requested atNARIC . If this is the case, we advise you to initiate this recognition procedure as soon as possible. You are required to have the recognition no later than on the date of your appointment.
- You have at least two years of postdoctoral experience on 1 September 2026. This term of two years is determined by the date mentioned on the required diploma.
