The Department of Music at the University at Buffalo invites applications for the endowed Slee Chair in Music at the rank of an advanced Assistant or early career Associate Professor in music composition with a specialty in electronic music. This tenure-track position is expected to begin on August 17, 2026.
Applicants should have a Ph.D., D.M.A. or DPhil in composition and be an active composer with an impressive record of accomplishment in the field of electronic and instrumental composition. They should possess advanced knowledge of software tools and equipment related to interactive live digital signal processing, spatial audio, recording and electronic music production. Their creative work and teaching would be expected to make use of the department’s newly equipped 1,500 square foot Intermedia Lab and Performance Space, which features a 22‑speaker Meyer Audio array powered by Meyer’s latest generation Nadia processor and Space Map Go. They would also work collaboratively with other faculty and staff to direct the use of the department’s four smaller electronic music studios.
Expectations for the Slee Professor include supporting the mission of the Center for 21st Century Music, which sponsors a range of activities in the field of new music composition, performance and artistic research. In this capacity, the Slee Professor would work closely with faculty on various initiatives in support of the PhD in Composition program. These initiatives involve facilitating visits with guest ensembles and composers, talks, workshops and joint seminar presentations.
The position involves a 2+2 teaching load comprising a mix of composition studio lessons, graduate and undergraduate seminars and lecture courses in composition and electronic music as well as general education courses in areas of interest to the candidate. It is anticipated that the Slee Professor would develop new upper‑level undergraduate courses to assist in the expansion of the Music Recording and Production curriculum. All course teaching would be offered in accordance with the Department’s curricular requirements and the University’s General Education course offerings.
The salary range for the position is competitive and includes annual research support.
