Job Description

Under general direction, responsible for planning and conducting media and community relations programs designed to create and maintain a favorable public image of the City through various communications media. Working conditions are primarily in an office environment. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

Work Location

City Tower – 100 W. Houston, San Antonio, TX 78205

Work Hours

7:45 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., Monday – Friday

Essential Job Functions

  • Develop, administer, and coordinate public relations and advertising programs related to the City of San Antonio.
  • Develop executive summaries of studies for distribution to the public and the media.
  • Arrange press conferences.
  • Develop programs of public tours of City facilities.
  • Prepare literature and brochures on the City of San Antonio, assigned department, and related developments and functions.
  • Attend public meetings to obtain and impart necessary information concerning assigned department.
  • Promote goodwill through publicity efforts such as speeches, exhibits, films, tours, and Q&A sessions.
  • Prepare written proposals to foundations, corporations, and private individuals for capital improvement projects.
  • Implement promotional programs involving the news media in departmental programs.
  • Coordinate all aspects of City ceremonial events, facility grand openings, and dedications.
  • Prepare a marketing plan and budget for the Division, including monitoring of expenditures.
  • Manage the production of publications utilized to promote the department and the City (e.g., travel update, convention update, industry review, annual calendar) and research leads and story ideas.
  • Supervise the maintenance of resource files, mailing lists, and statistical data on the department.
  • Work with other City departments and local groups in activities related to the City.
  • Make sales calls to media to place articles on San Antonio and may travel to other cities.
  • Supervise and edit publications aimed at various markets.
  • Compile statistical reports for the Commission.
  • Edit press releases.
  • Represent the department during community projects and at public, social, and business gatherings.
  • Facilitate access to the site and flow of information for the media in the event of an emergency.
  • Supervise assigned staff.
  • Perform related duties and fulfill responsibilities as required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Four (4) years of experience in journalism. Experience in public relations and bilingual Spanish skills highly desirable.
  • Valid Class “C” Texas Driver’s License.

  • Experience with internal communications.
  • Experience responding to media inquiries.
  • Experience requesting or facilitating government open records documents.
  • Experience with website and social media management and analytics.
  • Experience working for or with a government agency.
  • Experience managing special programs and pilots.
  • Video recording and editing experience.
  • Maintain professional communications with customers in person and via other media.
  • Excellent time management and organizational skills, capable of multitasking and meeting deadlines.
  • Collaborative team player with a positive attitude and willingness to learn.
