Job Summary

RIT is seeking a collaborative, dynamic, and experienced theatre technician to serve as the Assistant Technical Director (ATD) for the School of Performing Arts (SPA) in the College of Liberal Arts. The ATD will support and manage productions and performances presented in the new state‑of‑the‑art 750‑seat Music Performance Theater (MPT) and other venues across campus, working closely with the SPA Technical Director to oversee all technical aspects of production, including lighting, audio, video, staging, and scenic construction. Additionally, the ATD will develop and maintain technical drawings, documentation, and training materials while mentoring students.

Job Responsibilities

  • Support and manage productions and performances presented in the Music Performance Theater and other campus venues.
  • Oversee all technical aspects of production, including lighting, audio, video, staging, and scenic construction.
  • Develop and maintain technical drawings, documentation, and training materials.
  • Provide support and mentorship to students.
  • Work safely around power tools, ladders, lifts, and electricity; lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work at heights up to 50 ft.
  • Work nights, weekends, extended days, and evenings as required.

Education and Experience

  • BA or BFA in Technical Theater or a related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in scenic design, technical theater production, concert production, large venue production, or related experience.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States.

Required Skills

  • Strong Vectorworks or AutoCAD experience.
  • Thorough understanding of all aspects of technical theatre, including set construction, lighting equipment, rigging, projections, and sound.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, ANSI, and ESTA TSP safety standards.
  • Strong leadership and autonomous decision‑making abilities, especially in high‑pressure situations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft and Google suite, Zoom, and related software.
  • Background in event production, including network and IT infrastructure for audio and lighting workflows.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently.
  • Experience managing a production department or scene shop.
  • Strong communication, collaboration, and team‑leadership abilities.
  • Ability to meet deadlines, adapt to changing priorities, and manage multiple projects concurrently.
  • Ability to establish and maintain respectful working relationships with all groups and individuals.
  • Continuous availability for extended days, evenings, and weekends.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in technical theater or scenic design.
  • In‑depth knowledge of audio signal processing systems.
  • In‑depth knowledge of lighting and projection systems, both conventional and intelligent.
  • Experience supervising a full‑service scene shop.
  • Certifications: ETCP Rigging, Dante Level I‑III, OSHA 10‑hour training.
  • Experience with CNC machinery.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture, ASL, or willingness to learn.
  • Prior experience in a higher‑education setting.

Work Location & Salary

Henrietta Campus – 100% located at the main campus. Salary range: $45,700 – $76,500.
