Observer is looking for a regular freelance writer to cover the latest in luxury timepieces, including important watches coming to auction, notable auction results, trending collectors, revered lists of coveted timepieces, and more. The ideal candidate is fascinated by watch developments, the companies, collectors, and sales that shift the market.

This role is for an early‑or mid‑career culture, fashion, or lifestyle journalist who wants to develop expertise in horology and has a network of sources in this niche. You should understand the auction world and the luxury accessory and antiques markets. You will track major auction houses and dealers, monitor new releases and collaborations from legacy brands and independents, and identify emerging collecting trends.

Responsibilities

• Track major auction houses and dealers.
• Monitor new releases, collaborations, and announcements from legacy brands and independents.
• Identify emerging collecting trends.
• Report on watch auctions, results, and market developments.
• Write breaking news stories, feature articles, and curated lists for a general luxury audience.
• Pitch story ideas regularly and manage story development.

Qualifications

• Familiarity with major watch brands, independents, and key complications.
• Ability to translate technical watchmaking language for a general luxury audience.
• At least two years of experience in culture, fashion, or lifestyle journalism with a track record of writing for reputable news outlets.
• Experience writing both breaking news and longer stories or lists.
• Eagerness to find and pitch story ideas regularly.
• High journalistic standards, attention to detail, and fact‑checking skills.

Our standard rate is $250 to $350 per article for 600–800 words. Higher rates may be negotiable for exclusives and longer features. This role is limited to U.S.‑based applicants.
