Technical Director, Civil Engineering – WSP (U.S.)

Provide leadership in civil engineering, ensuring quality design, safety, and compliance with regulatory standards. Own innovation, business development, and guidance of teams across projects.

Responsibilities

  • Provide proactive, strategic leadership for civil engineering discipline and function.
  • Perform engineering review of permit applications, design plans, specifications, and contracts.
  • Lead larger-scale civil engineering projects, managing budgets, schedules, and subcontractors.
  • Develop business and successful execution of infrastructure work.
  • Lead technical aspects of contract negotiation, presentations, and meetings.
  • Support strategy, growth, and pipeline development for civil engineering work.
  • Ensure profitable performance of projects and successful completion.
  • Assist in annual update of business tactical action plans.
  • Meet with public and private entities to discuss engineering challenges.
  • Develop and continuously improve engineering discipline certifications and value proposition.
  • Conduct needs analyses, client value surveys, and address skill gaps or risks.
  • Schedule discipline meetings, provide updates and recommendations.
  • Serve as liaison to federal, state, local agencies, clients, subcontractors, and industry groups.
  • Develop and inform proposal scopes, timelines, pricing, and budgeting.
  • Interpret and summarize data and reports for sound engineering conclusions.
  • Provide verbal and written inputs to multidisciplinary teams.
  • Develop client base and identify business development opportunities.
  • Mentor staff for professional growth.
  • Manage performance guidance and leadership of assigned staff.
  • Stay current in latest civil engineering techniques and practices.
  • Collaborate across disciplines for trusted advisor service.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making, adhering to WSP & Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or closely related discipline.
  • 12+ years of post‑education experience in engineering, civil, and infrastructure design.
  • Engineer license required (multi‑state preferred).
  • Advanced proficiency with civil engineering principles, construction laws, and permitting.
  • Advanced proficiency with infrastructure design.
  • Strong knowledge of civil construction codes, regulations, and compliance practices.
  • Advanced proficiency in technical computations and engineering decision‑making.
  • Independent working style with leadership over mid‑level to senior team members, strict QA/QC.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication and persuasive interaction skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, tactical lateral thinking, attention to detail.
  • Ability to secure cooperation from diverse sources at all levels.
  • Advanced proficiency with office automation and industry software (MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, etc).
  • Track record of workplace safety and adherence to WSP safety policies.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to changing schedules and business needs.
  • Occasional travel may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Engineering.
  • Experience managing review and approval of documents, certifications, and deliverables in a multi‑project environment.

Compensation

Expected Salary (all locations): $157,200 – $267,700.
