Overview The Chief Marketing & Communications Officer (CMCO) reports directly to the Dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas at Austin. The CMCO provides strategic leadership for marketing, communications, and public relations initiatives, overseeing a dynamic team and aligning the School’s brand with university standards.

Responsibilities

Executive Leadership: Partner with the Dean and internal collaborators to develop speeches, talking points, event scripts, reports, graphic design and presentations that advance institutional priorities.

Team Leadership: Lead, mentor and motivate a multidisciplinary marketing and creative team, fostering a positive culture and supporting professional growth for staff at all levels.

Issues & Crisis Management: Monitor and manage reputational challenges and complex issues with clarity, speed and alignment across internal and external stakeholders.

Budget and Resources: Plan and manage the School’s marketing and communications budget and assets, ensuring effective and compliant use of resources.

University Collaboration: Serve as a member of the University Marketing and Communications (UMAC) leadership team, partnering closely with communications directors and senior marketing professionals across UT Austin.

Strategic Communications & Planning: Oversee the creation of a long‑term marketing and communications plan, develop and execute digital strategies, and establish reporting and analytics systems to measure effectiveness and promote ongoing improvement.

Marketing Leadership: Direct media relations, content strategy, storytelling, production and digital strategy, building the School’s expertise and reputation through consistent, cohesive messaging across all platforms.

Qualifications

Minimum 10 years of experience in public relations, communications, marketing, or related fields; bachelor’s degree required.

Proven ability to build strong partnerships with internal and external stakeholders at all levels.

Comprehensive understanding of digital ecosystems and ability to drive coherent digital experiences across channels.

Leadership experience delivering successful marketing and communications initiatives and strategies.

Experience envisioning, developing, and implementing comprehensive strategic communications plans, using analytics to guide strategy and evaluate outcomes.

Outstanding written and oral communication skills, with keen ability to organize, prioritize projects and manage budgets.

Preferred: Master’s degree or higher in communications, marketing, business or related field with 10+ years of leadership experience in higher education.

Salary Range $125,000 + depending on qualifications
