La Clínica de La Raza is a nonprofit community‑based health center established in 1971 to address health barriers and create better lives for underserved populations. We have proudly grown into over 35 sites across Alameda, Contra Costa, and Solano counties.
Summary La Clínica’s job shadowing learning experience is designed to give participants a broad understanding of the organization’s culture, processes, and values. It differs from clinical rotations by focusing on overall operations rather than specific skill development. Participants observe our team in action, attend meetings, review project materials, and engage in conversations with professionals to gain insight into daily operations and career paths.
Job Shadow Participants
Observe professionals in action and learn how they use software and technology to deliver results.
Join meetings with teams to gain insight into collaborative approaches and decision‑making processes.
Take a guided tour of the office for a behind‑the‑scenes look at operations.
Review relevant project materials and documentation to deepen understanding.
Engage in conversations with team members and learn from their experiences.
Record questions or ideas that arise during the experience for follow‑up.
Shadows should not perform tasks typical of paid staff except brief learning periods.
SG1 SG2 Time Limitations
High School students: 3–25 hours per semester.
Minors under 18 must be enrolled in school.
Adults in Programs: maximum 40 hours per semester with proof of class requirements.
All participants must complete an emergency card form and a confidentiality agreement.
Participants are not permitted to miss school hours for shadowing or to shadow parents/guardians or relatives.
Transportation to the worksite is the responsibility of the parent/guardian or participant.
Students under 18 must obtain consent from a parent/guardian and sign the liability release.
Health Clearance Requirements
All participants must provide immunization records including name, date, and location (flu shot current season, Hepatitis B, MMR, Varicella, COVID‑19 1st and 2nd dose).
Negative TB test within the last year or chest radiograph within the last two years.
Volunteers (18+): background check, valid government ID, mask‑fit test upon request.
Minors: signed consent form, no background check required, valid school ID, mask‑fit test upon request.
Dress code and personal appearance standards enforced (professional attire, good hygiene, no open‑toe shoes in clinical areas, no offensive or revealing clothing).
Confidentiality
Shadow may access PHI; handle with utmost care.
Discuss confidential matters only in private settings when necessary.
Never share passwords or access codes.
Log off computers when away from work.
Dispose of PHI documents in designated shredding bins.
Keep documents locked when not in use; do not take home PHI.
Exercise caution when sending emails or voicemails; avoid sharing confidential info.
Equipment and Electronic Media
Shadows may use phones or email only for limited personal matters to avoid interfering with work performance.
Child Abuse / Neglect / Elder Abuse Reporting
Report suspected abuse immediately to a supervisor.
All reports are confidential.
Safety and Security
Report any safety concerns or unsafe conditions to a supervisor.
Follow posted safety rules and emergency procedures.
Familiarize with fire exits, extinguishers, and evacuation plans.
Report accidents or injuries to a supervisor and seek first aid.
Follow ergonomic guidelines for chair and computer use.
Adhere to safe parking practices and speed regulations.
