Library Associate

Library Associates help patrons use library services, technology, and facilities and perform a variety of circulation, administrative, technical, and other tasks under the direction of the department head and/or Library Director. This position is approximately 10 hours per week and requires availability during both daytime and evening hours. Essential duties include: Serving as the main point of contact for library patrons and answering basic reference and directional questions via phone, chat service, email, and in-person to help facilitate a welcoming environment. Performing circulation duties, such as helping patrons check out and return books; providing input and resources to help patrons find materials; managing patron accounts; and other duties, such as tracking down and locating items, and check-ins and returns. Assisting in technical services, including but not limited to: repairing and processing damaged items; maintaining historical records; assisting with the acquisition and withdrawal processes; and assisting in the Interlibrary Loan process. Performing tasks using a wide range of technology, including but not limited to specific enterprise library technologies like the library's integrated library system (ILS), and general office technology like word processing and spreadsheets, and digital resources and/or databases. Enforcing library policy, assisting in maintaining a clean and well-maintained collection and building, and collecting and recording daily financial transactions. Other duties as assigned. Periodic responsibilities include: Preparing statistics and reports for all departments of the library. Assisting in the management of the meeting room facilities. Preparing, organizing, and presenting library sponsored classes and programs and special events. Qualifications: Education/Experience: High school diploma or GED; one year of college preferred. Must have at least one year of experience working with the public. Prior customer experience preferred. Knowledge and Skills: Must have basic knowledge of public libraries, databases, online library systems, mathematical and computer skills or ability to gain these skills. Excellent customer service skills, phone skills, strong interpersonal skills, and above average computer skills required. Ability to pay close attention to detail, listen carefully, take instruction, and learn procedures quickly is required. Must work well with others. Working Conditions and Physical Requirements: Must be able to stand and sit for long periods of time and lift up to 20 pounds occasionally. Must be able to work evenings and weekends within the library building or other buildings as directed by supervisor. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, stand, sit, walk, use hands to finger and grasp, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and talk or hear. Occasionally climb, balance, stoop, and crouch and/or shovel snow. Must have good vision

far, near, and depth perception. Must be able to file in the correct order. Must report to work when scheduled and on time.
