Title Code:INSTRUCTOR: ORIENTATION & MOBILITY JOB SUMMARY Provides orientation and mobility services to students of Anne Arundel County Public Schools in compliance with state, federal, and Board of Education policies and procedures in order to protect and promote orientation and mobility within the environment and safe travel skills that facilitate student’s ability to access educational programming. Instructor is responsible for student’s safety during orientation and mobility instruction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

Instructs students who are blind and with visual impairments in skills and knowledge to enable the student to relate their body image and spatial, directional, and orientation skills to their environment and independent travel.

Trains students to use tactile, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory, and proprioceptive information.

Prepares instruction through lesson plans to address each student’s assessed needs and Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and objectives.

Prepares and uses equipment and materials such as tactile maps, models, low vision devices, adaptive mobility devices, and various cane devices for the development of orientation and mobility skills.

Provides orientation of new buildings and new class schedules to students who are blind and with visual impairments and instructions regarding disability awareness and self-advocacy skills in students.

Performs assessments that focus on long and short-term student needs and contributes to the development of the Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Provides in-service, consultation, support services and community resources information to students, families, and school and safety personnel regarding the blind and visually impaired student needs, and appropriate methods of student interaction to foster maximum independence and safety.

Evaluates student’s progress ongoing and maintain accurate records in accordance to federal, state and local standards.

Participates in parent conferences, meetings and teacher trainings.

Performs other related duties as assigned within the same classification or lower.

Education

Bachelor’s Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university required.

Master’s Degree in related field of education from a regionally accredited college or university preferred.

Experience

Three (3) years successful classroom teaching experience preferred.

Three (3) years school-based orientation and mobility experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics

Knowledge of current trends, research and technology in field of specialization.

Knowledge of the special education process and curricula in the public-school system.

Knowledge of school organization and administration, with special emphasis on teaching techniques used with students who are blind or visually impaired.

Ability to employ a variety of teaching styles to respond to the needs of diverse learners.

Demonstrated ability to speak and write effectively.

Demonstrated ability to deal effectively with students, staff, parents, community agencies and the public.

Demonstrated ability to effectively work and communicate with diverse populations.

Demonstrated proficiency with business technology applications (e.g. Video/Web Conferencing, Microsoft Office Suite — Word, Excel, Outlook, and/or PowerPoint preferred).

Licenses and Certifications Employee must retain active licenses, certifications, and enrollment as a condition of employment.

Hold or be eligible for educator certificate/license issued by Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) required.

Hold or be eligible for Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialists (COMS) issued by Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation & Education Professionals (ACVREP) required.

Hold or be eligible for Driver’s License (DL) Class C Non-Commercial issued by Maryland or State of Legal Residence (MVA/DMV) required; and

Daily access to reliable transportation.

Driving Requirements

Driving is required to conduct bona fide Board business that is within the scope of employment in this position.
