Position Details Assistant Cook 00302 (Food Service Technician I) – 00302. Non‑Exempt, Full‑time, General Public posting. Department Objective Christopher Newport University’s Dining Services mission: provide high‑quality, fast, customer‑friendly food experiences, maintain clean, positive atmospheres, support inclusive environments, and deliver outstanding customer satisfaction. The position supports this mission by preparing menu items, supervising staff, and maintaining kitchen standards.

Purpose of the Position Under the direction of the Food Service Manager and First Cook, the assistant cook prepares and produces assigned menu items, reads and follows recipes, assigns and monitors subordinate personnel, and performs additional duties including serving, cleaning, and other tasks as assigned.

Key Responsibilities

Prepare and produce assigned menu items according to recipes.

Read and interpret recipes, converting measurements and cooking methods.

Monitor and assign tasks to subordinate personnel.

Ensure kitchen equipment and tools are used safely and maintained.

Serve and clean as required.

Work from 12:00 pm – 8:30 pm in extreme temperatures and congested areas.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to read and write.

Basic math skills.

Knowledge of cooking methods and kitchen equipment.

Good organizational and multitasking abilities.

Verbal and written communication with supervisors and subordinates.

Work safely in extreme temperatures, congested areas, and wet processes.

Wear protective footwear.

Education and Experience Requirements

High school graduate or equivalent education and experience.

Experience in a high‑volume kitchen environment.

Preferred: ServSafe or equivalent food handler certification; 10+ years culinary arts or practical experience; supervisory experience; university or institutional workplace; menu planning and recipe development; experience with commercial kitchen equipment.

Salary and Benefits Starting at $32,672.00, commensurate with education and experience. Conditions of Employment

Classified position with a 12‑month probationary period.

New employees must attend a 2‑day New Employee Orientation Program.

Work hours: 12:00 pm – 8:30 pm, extreme temperature and congested area safety as noted.
