Job Description and Duties Within the Division of Equipment (DOE) and under the direction of a Highway Mechanic Supervisor and/or a Caltrans Heavy Equipment Mechanic Leadworker, the incumbent will work in a shop and/or field environment performing construction, inspection, diagnostic, repair, and servicing of various equipment used in the Department's fleet. The incumbent will complete records and reports, use computer equipment for various tasks, and may instruct or give direction to helpers, apprentices, or other employees. The incumbent must possess a valid class C driver license and will assume responsibility for reasonable safeguards, proper use and handling of materials, tools, equipment, and facilities at all times while using personal protective equipment. The job may require work outside, travel to field or highway maintenance stations, and work in inclement weather, including severe cold or heat. The incumbent may assist with daily shop operation. Job assignments may involve travel, rotation, shift changes, additional work hours, and workdays.

May be exposed to dirt, noise, uneven surfaces, hazardous materials, and varying temperatures. May require travel, rotation, shift changes, additional work hours, mandatory overtime, and work during emergency or declared emergency situations.
