Part-Time Public Works Maintenance Worker

The City of Tehachapi is seeking qualified candidates for two Part-Time Public Works Maintenance Worker positions. This recruitment is intended to fill current vacancies only. The position is limited to a maximum of 999 hours per year, with hours assigned based on operational needs. This is an excellent opportunity to join the City of Tehachapi's Public Works Department in a flexible, hands-on role supporting the maintenance and upkeep of City infrastructure and facilities. Part-Time Public Works Maintenance Workers assist with a wide variety of tasks across multiple divisions, contributing directly to the safety, cleanliness, and appearance of the community. This position is well-suited for individuals seeking entry-level public works experience, practical skill development, and meaningful work in a team-oriented environment. Part-Time Public Works Maintenance Workers perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled labor tasks related to the maintenance and repair of City streets, sidewalks, stormwater systems, sewer systems, public buildings, facilities, landscaped areas, and rights-of-way. Duties may include asphalt patching, concrete work, traffic control setup, graffiti removal, basic building maintenance, landscaping, litter and debris removal, and assisting with inspections and minor repairs. The position may involve operating light equipment and power tools such as trucks, mowers, string trimmers, blowers, pressure washers, hand tools, and small construction equipment. Workers may be assigned to various divisions within the Public Works Department based on operational needs and may report to different supervisors depending on assignment. Knowledge of: Basic uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment, including hand tools, power tools, and light machinery used in public works maintenance tasks. Basic methods, practices, and equipment used in building maintenance services and activities, including tasks such as painting, plumbing, carpentry, minor electrical work, and general repairs. Safe work practices and procedures, including proper lifting techniques, the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and adherence to safety guidelines while working with construction tools, equipment, and materials. Basic landscaping and groundskeeping techniques, such as mowing, trimming, and planting, and the tools used for these tasks, including lawnmowers, string trimmers, blowers, and hand tools. General knowledge of maintaining and cleaning public facilities, including restrooms, parks, streets, sidewalks, and storm drain systems, and the tools used in such work. Awareness of environmental and safety regulations related to public works tasks and the safe handling of materials, including handling waste and debris removal in compliance with local standards. Basic vehicle operation skills, including trucks, utility vehicles, and trailers, and the proper maintenance and cleaning of these vehicles Licenses & Certifications: Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate valid California Driver's License. Work is primarily performed outdoors and may occasionally require evening, weekend, or overtime shifts during peak periods or in response to maintenance needs. No prior public works experience is required, and this position may be filled at an entry level. Examination Process: As part of the selection process, applicants may be required to participate in an interview designed to evaluate general maintenance aptitude, ability to follow instructions, safety awareness, and suitability for part-time public works assignments. Meeting minimum qualifications does not guarantee selection. Final hiring decisions will be made at the discretion of City staff based on qualifications, availability, and departmental needs.
