SkillsUSA Rhode Island, in partnership with the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) and The Metropolitan Regional Career and Technical Center, empowers students to become world‑class workers, leaders, and responsible citizens. Through career and technical education, skills competitions, and leadership development, SkillsUSA prepares Rhode Island's students for successful careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations.

Reports To: SkillsUSA RI Board of Directors and RIDE CTE Team

Employment Status: Permanent, Full‑time Position

Start Date: October 2025

Salary Range: $67,000 - 77,000 (commensurate with experience)

Position Description

SkillsUSA Rhode Island is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional to serve as State Director. The State Director will provide overall management and coordination of SkillsUSA Rhode Island programs, events, and operations. Working closely with the SkillsUSA RI Board of Directors and the RIDE Career and Technical Education (CTE) team, the State Director will ensure that all programs align with SkillsUSA's mission to empower members to become world‑class workers, leaders, and responsible citizens. This position requires strong leadership, exceptional organizational skills, fiscal management expertise, and a commitment to student success and workforce development. The role involves approximately 35% travel to represent SkillsUSA RI at state, regional, and national events.

Responsibilities

  • Governance & Administration: Coordinate monthly meetings of the SkillsUSA RI Board of Directors, including preparing agendas, minutes, reports, and communications; maintain official records, bylaws, and strategic planning documents; provide quarterly reports and updates to the CTE Board, RIDE, and the RI CTE Directors; ensure organizational compliance with state and national SkillsUSA standards.
  • Membership & Chapter Development: Recruit new members and chapters throughout Rhode Island; manage all state membership records in coordination with the National SkillsUSA office; provide timely, responsive support to chapter advisors and members; develop and implement strategies for membership growth and retention.
  • Student Leadership Development: Oversee the State Officer Team, providing training, guidance, and logistical support; design and implement leadership development activities statewide; mentor student leaders in professional skills and personal development; facilitate opportunities for students to develop workforce‑ready competencies.
  • Conferences & Events Management: Plan and execute the Fall Leadership Conference and the State Leadership & Skills Conference (SLSC); plan and coordinate the State Competitions Awards Night; manage Rhode Island's delegation to the National Leadership & Skills Conference (NLSC), including logistics, registration, and supervision; ensure all events are fiscally responsible, well‑coordinated, and aligned with SkillsUSA standards; oversee competition coordination and judging processes.
  • Partnerships & Industry Engagement: Cultivate and sustain relationships with industry partners, employers, and community organizations; secure sponsorships, donations, and scholarships to support SkillsUSA RI initiatives; develop and maintain a network of business and industry supporters; connect students with career pathway opportunities and workplace experiences.
  • Financial Management: Work with bookkeeper to prepare and execute an annual budget; track income, expenses, grants, and industry contributions in compliance with professional accounting practices; identify and pursue grant opportunities and supplemental funding sources; maintain transparent financial records and reporting systems.
  • Communications & Marketing: Maintain and grow SkillsUSA RI's website and social media presence; distribute newsletters, event communications, and public relations materials; promote SkillsUSA RI through outreach, media engagement, and legislative advocacy; develop marketing materials to showcase student achievements and program impact.
  • Travel & Representation: Represent SkillsUSA Rhode Island at state, regional, and national meetings, including CTSO events, RIDE-sponsored functions, ACTE conferences, and SkillsUSA national events; serve as the primary ambassador for SkillsUSA RI with stakeholders and the community; participate in professional development opportunities to stay current with CTE trends and best practices.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (education, business, workforce development, or related field); Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 2 years of project management experience.
  • 1-3 years of supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with Career and Technical Education (CTE), the Rhode Island CTE landscape and regulations, workforce development, and/or skilled trades preferred.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational abilities with strong attention to detail.
  • Proven fiscal management skills and ability to work within budgetary constraints.
  • Demonstrated ability to secure external funding through grants, sponsorships, and partnerships.
  • Commitment to student leadership development and workforce preparation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Proficiency with technology, including website management, social media platforms, and database systems.
  • Access to reliable transportation for approximately 35% travel.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends for events.
  • Growth mindset and willingness to develop cultural competency.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations of students, educators, and industry partners.
