Job Description
Mid-Level MySQL and PostgreSQL DBA is responsible for ensuring the reliability, security, and optimal performance of database systems across open-source environments. The DBA supports application development teams, automates database operations, performs regular maintenance, and troubleshoots complex database issues. This role requires hands‑on experience managing production databases, with a strong understanding of both MySQL and PostgreSQL ecosystems.
Job Description and Duties
- Assist in driving, standardizing, and managing a unified Configuration Management database.
- Install, configure, and manage Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases on Linux, Windows, and AWS platforms.
- Set up new databases, servers, and related infrastructure in both cloud and on-premises environments.
- Manage replication, clustering, and high availability configurations to ensure reliability and uptime.
- Perform database performance tuning, identify root causes of critical issues, and recommend optimization strategies.
- Apply Quarterly Patch Set Updates (PSUs) for Oracle and MySQL on AWS EC2 and other supported platforms.
- Plan and perform database upgrades, patches, migrations, and refreshes as needed.
- Support database modernization and AWS DMS initiatives in collaboration with the development team.
- Monitor database metrics and system performance, proactively addressing bottlenecks or failures.
- Configure and verify database backups, ensuring successful completion within defined SLAs.
- Support monthly SAFER baselines and SMS baseline activities, including instance snapshot creation.
- Perform regular maintenance tasks such as index rebuilds, statistics updates, and integrity checks.
- Troubleshoot database performance issues, slow‑running queries, and deadlocks using native tools.
- Manage user accounts, roles, and permissions, maintaining security and access controls across all environments.
- Implement and monitor database security, including vulnerability remediation, encryption, and audit logging.
- Participate in failover, disaster recovery (DR), and backup validation testing.
- Provide on‑call production support outside business hours (primarily for SFI‑related incidents).
- Conduct AWS R&D tasks for new initiatives and automation improvements.
- Maintain comprehensive documentation for database environments, configurations, and maintenance activities.
- Generate performance reports, growth trend analyses, and usage statistics.
- Collaborate closely with application, infrastructure, and security teams to ensure smooth operations and system upgrades.
Required Education and Experience
- Certified in Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL database administration.
- Strong knowledge of AWS database services, including RDS, EC2‑hosted databases, and related cloud concepts.
- Expertise in managing Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases on Linux and Windows platforms.
- Proficiency in database installation, configuration, optimization, tuning, and maintenance.
- Experience with database backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies, including failover testing.
- Ability to troubleshoot database performance issues, analyze execution plans, and optimize queries.
- Knowledge of database security best practices, including encryption and access control.
- Familiarity with monitoring tools and automating database maintenance tasks.
- Experience supporting production databases with on‑call responsibilities.
- Strong collaboration and communication skills to work effectively with application, infrastructure, and operations teams.
Preferred skills and qualifications
- Install, configure, and manage Oracle, MySQL, and PostgreSQL databases on Linux and Windows platforms.
- Deploy and manage databases on AWS (RDS, EC2) and on‑premises environments.
- Facilitate database migrations, upgrades, backups, and restores.
- Administer user access and manage roles/permissions based on project requirements.
- Monitor database health, proactively rebuild indexes, and perform routine maintenance tasks.
- Troubleshoot performance issues, optimize SQL queries, and analyze execution plans for slow queries.
- Configure database security measures, including encryption, user access policies, and compliance standards.
- Participate in failover and disaster recovery testing, providing recommendations and solutions.
- Support on‑call duties to resolve production issues promptly.
- Participate in monthly database maintenance, patching, and updates.
- Collaborate with teams to ensure smooth deployments, system upgrades, and migrations.
- Maintain proper documentation for database operations, maintenance activities, and incident reports.
