Job Description
The Core Tax Services (CTS) Senior Manager – ASC740 is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objectives, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex corporate tax and ASC 740 tax issues. In this role, the Senior Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues and recognize and communicate potential risks and potential changes in tax policy. The Senior Manager also supports marketing, networking, and business development within their expertise area, and may provide written tax advice to clients.
Job Duties
- Tax Compliance
- Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (“TQM”).
- Conducts top‑level review of T/R and resolves all tax issues with client; involves specialists where appropriate.
- Communicates with client and Assurance on any issues identified in tax accrual reviews.
- Plans and reviews the tax process and procedures to include:
- Budgeting and staffing
- Monitoring engagement process and actual time incurred vs. budget with assistance of Senior
- Timely billing and communication of out‑of‑scope activity to client
- Timely collection of A/R
- Manages client relationships and expectations per project.
- Provides timely advice to clients.
- Research
- Identifies when research is needed; frames issues clearly; and reports analysis concisely.
- Identifies complex issues for research and provides methodology for efficient processes.
- Trains managers/staff on research skills and ASC 740 issue framing.
- Involves firm specialists as appropriate.
- ASC 740 (fka FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
- Applies Firm policies, standards, and BDO TQM regarding ASC 740 proactively and correctly.
- Explains and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients.
- Communicates with Assurance to plan tax accrual reviews.
- Reviews tax provisions and applies in‑depth ASC 740 knowledge.
- Reviews prepared workpapers.
- Utilizes and manages Specialized Tax Services (“STS”) as needed.
- Tax Consulting
- Develops, recommends, and implements methods to maximize client benefits through tax reduction.
- Considers applicability of CTS and STS consulting specialties for each client.
- Develops and implements a work plan for STS assistance on ongoing projects.
- Serves as a technical resource.
- Ensures client service teams comply with Firm policy regarding Written Tax Advice (“WTA”).
- Provides assistance with exam support.
- Frames projects and issues for effective delegation to seniors and associates.
- Tax Specialization
- Develops in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues in areas such as individual, corporate, property, sales, pass‑through, state and local, international, expatriate, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, compensation and benefits, accounting methods, R&D tax benefits.
- May organize and conduct internal CPE training sessions in specialization area.
- May train and mentor managers, seniors, and associates on ASC 740.
- Strategy Development
- Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to benefit clients, the firm, or personnel.
- Makes suggestions for improving previous work products or approaches.
- May lead marketing campaigns as applicable.
- Presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
- Collaborates with the Firm’s National Tax and Specialized Tax Services to deliver high‑quality deliverables and analyses on ASC 740.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
- Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
- Trains associates and seniors on current software tools.
- Acts as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
- Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
- Provides verbal and written performance feedback.
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Taxation (required)
- Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation (preferred)
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Taxation (required)
- Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation (preferred)
Experience
- Eight (8) or more years of prior experience (required)
- Experience managing the process of preparing and auditing ASC 740 computations for privately held and publicly traded clients (required)
- Prior supervisory experience (required)
- Multinational client experience (preferred)
License/Certifications
- CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) or equivalent (required)
Software
- Experience with Microsoft Office Tools (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook) and Adobe Acrobat (preferred)
- Experience with tax research databases such as BNA and RIA; proficiency in all tax compliance process software including GoFileRoom, GoSystemRS, Caseware, BNA Depreciation Software, or comparable programs and standard tax workpapers (preferred)

California Range: $146,000 - $200,000
Colorado Range: $120,000 - $180,000
Illinois Range: $140,000 - $190,000
Maryland Range: $150,000 - $180,000
Massachusetts Range: $150,000 - $206,000
Minnesota Range: $130,000 - $190,000
New Jersey Range: $155,000 - $200,000
NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $190,000 - $225,000
Washington Range: $150,000 - $190,000
Washington DC Range: $162,000 - $190,000
