This role is part of California Post’s bold expansion into Los Angeles. We are seeking an experienced, enterprise-focused News Reporter to deliver exclusives, investigative pieces, and deeply reported stories that resonate across California and nationally.
The California Post is a game changer, putting the people of the Golden State first and holding the powerful accountable across digital platforms and print. Our mission is to bring New York Post’s DNA of powerful, agenda‑setting journalism to the West Coast, be a fresh and fearless voice for common sense, and cover entertainment, sports, technology, and more in Los Angeles.
Application Instructions
Applicants should submit a cover letter or a short video cover letter. If submitting a video, include a link to the video in your cover letter or as an additional document. We do not accept direct video file uploads.
Responsibilities
Lead enterprise and investigative reporting across Los Angeles and greater California, producing impactful stories with statewide and national relevance.
Break exclusive stories by cultivating and maintaining a wide network of sources—whether deeply within one beat or across multiple beats.
Pursue ambitious, longer‑lead investigative projects alongside quick‑turn enterprise and breaking stories.
Pitch and execute original story ideas that expose hidden dynamics of power, uncover wrongdoing, or reveal overlooked stories and communities.
Cover a range of hard news topics, including politics, crime, courts, culture, education, and uniquely Californian issues.
Use documents, court records, data, and public records requests to strengthen and deepen reporting.
Travel as needed to cover stories on the ground, both in California and nationwide.
Uphold the highest journalistic standards of accuracy, fairness, and clarity in all reporting.
Collaborate with editors, photographers, and digital teams to create compelling, multi‑platform coverage.
Represent the California Post on‑camera, in podcasts, and across digital platforms to promote and discuss reporting.
Requirements
At least 7–10 years of newsroom reporting experience, with a strong background in features, enterprise, or investigative reporting.
Proven ability to pitch, develop, and execute ambitious story ideas with national appeal.
Track record of producing deeply reported, high‑impact stories that stand out in a competitive news environment.
Established sources and reporting contacts across a range of industries or beats, with the persistence and hustle to expand networks and secure exclusive access.
Genuine intellectual curiosity across a wide range of topics—from true crime, Hollywood, and tech to politics, education, and culture— with sharp instincts for buzzy or high‑impact stories.
Strong storytelling and writing skills, with the ability to capture nuance, context, and character; clips should demonstrate narrative craft, precision, and a distinct voice.
Excellent news judgment, accuracy, and fact‑checking discipline, with a clear understanding of ethical and legal considerations in investigative reporting.
Proficiency with WordPress or similar CMS; familiarity with digital storytelling and multimedia tools strongly preferred.
Ability to thrive in a fast‑paced newsroom while balancing both quick‑turn features and longer‑term enterprise projects.
High level of self‑motivation, commitment to teamwork, and solutions‑oriented mindset.
Strong writing and reporting skills are the core of this role.
On‑camera experience is strongly preferred, as we’re looking for reporters comfortable discussing and presenting their stories on video.
A strong social media presence or following is a plus.
Flexibility to travel as needed, sometimes on short notice, to pursue story leads or conduct in‑person reporting.
Additional Information
Note: This role will be expected to report on‑site 5 days per week.
