Observer is looking for a regular New York City party reporter to cover the elite social events, from museum galas to awards ceremonies, that attract the best and brightest across industries. This contributor will attend select events on behalf of Observer, report on what happened and who was there, gather quotes and anecdotes, select photos and deliver sharp, timely write‑ups that capture the spirit of the night. This role is ideal for an early‑ or mid‑career culture, fashion or lifestyle journalist who thrives in social settings and knows how to balance access with journalistic discretion. The right candidate will have strong instincts for what makes a party newsworthy and a developed understanding of New York’s cultural and social landscape. They will be expected to file concise, lively dispatches that capture atmosphere, personality and context; select or request appropriate photos and provide accurate captions and IDs; and maintain strict deadlines. We’re Looking For a Reporter With Evening availability, especially on weeknights during gala and benefit season, with a typical cadence of 2-4 stories per month. A willingness to research and identify noteworthy attendees at each event. At least two years of experience in culture or lifestyle journalism and a track record for covering events/red carpets for reputable news outlets. A facility for writing stories that chronicle the movements of VIPs across philanthropy, culture, business and the arts. The confidence to approach anyone, no matter how famous. Experience working with event photographers and PR teams to secure images and verify names, affiliations and photo credits, as well as a keen eye for photos that are more compelling than the usual step‑and‑repeats. An eagerness to find and pitch parties regularly and the flexibility to take on assignments. High journalistic standards, attention to detail and a fun voice. Our standard rate is $300 to $400 per article for 600-800 words. Higher rates may be negotiable for more exclusive events.
