ABOUT THE ROLE The Pre-Planning Specialist plays a critical role in shaping the success of projects by planning the most efficient methods of execution. This role focuses on constructability, prefab strategy, and early integration with BIM and project teams to optimize shop fabrication and field installation. By standardizing best practices and leveraging data-driven planning, the Pre-Planning Specialist ensures improved field productivity, estimating accuracy, and overall project outcomes.

Company Overview Since 1912, Sturgeon Electric Company, Inc., a subsidiary of MYR Group, Inc, has provided comprehensive electrical construction services to clients throughout the western U.S. Sturgeon Electric has two divisions, offering both power line construction and commercial/industrial electrical construction, making it a full-service electrical provider.

Sturgeon Electric’s Commercial and Industrial (C&I) electrical construction division specializes in large-scale commercial electrical projects, telecommunications, traffic signalization, gas distribution, high voltage distribution service and maintenance to clients. Sturgeon Electric has experience performing projects under Integrated Lean Project Delivery methods and also offers pre-construction services, in-house pre-fabrication capabilities, and Building Information Modeling (BIM) capabilities.

Essential Functions

Project Review & Constructability

Review all awarded projects over $6M for constructability and prefab opportunities.

Review architectural, structural, and MEP drawings to determine the most efficient methods of installation.

Develop detailed

build plans

outlining project sequencing, labor strategies, material flow, and tool requirements.

Identify standard products, methods, and assemblies that should be used on each project.

Review specifications and prepare spec cheat sheets prior to takeoff and planning.

Prefab Opportunity Identification

Analyze project scopes, BIM models, and historical prefab catalogs to identify prefabrication opportunities.

Collaborate with estimators and project managers to establish prefab goals during early project stages.

Define project-specific prefab deliverables, including racks, kits, assemblies, and skids.

Integration with BIM

Attend BIM kickoff meetings and coordination sessions.

Perform

BIM markups

to highlight prefabrication opportunities, field constraints, and installation sequencing.

Translate coordinated BIM outputs into

buildable prefab spool packages

and shop drawings.

Verify constructability of the model before spooling and releasing drawings to the prefab shop.

Coordination with Prefab & Manufacturing

Act as the primary liaison between project teams and the prefab shop.

Track the status of prefab assemblies and ensure timely delivery to the field.

Develop visual workflows and dashboards to monitor prefab progress and implementation.

Standardization & Catalog Development

Build, maintain, and expand the company’s internal Prefab Catalog (fixtures, racks, whips, trapeze, conduit bends, assemblies, etc.).

Integrate standard methods and products into each project plan to improve repeatability and reduce variability.

Manage a virtual ordering portal for project managers and field foremen.

Establish usage standards for assemblies to improve estimating predictability and project consistency.

Procurement Collaboration

Identify opportunities for grouped material buyouts across multiple projects.

Collaborate with procurement on kit-based purchasing strategies for prefab assemblies.

Package project material BOMs with prefab deliverables to improve pricing, staging, and logistics.

Process Development & Improvement

Create and maintain internal SOPs and workflows for prefab planning and execution.

Define clear handoffs between estimating, preconstruction, BIM, prefab, field, and procurement teams.

Lead lessons‑learned sessions and integrate continuous improvement feedback into workflows.

Enhanced Kickoff & Pre‑Install Coordination

Partner with project leadership to facilitate the Enhanced Kickoff meeting process.

Present prefab opportunities, build plans, and standard methods at kickoff and pre‑install meetings.

Support field teams in understanding and implementing prefab and installation strategies.

May be required to travel to project locations in Colorado

Regular and predictable attendance

Essential functions of this position are to be performed at a Company‑designed office or field location.

ABOUT YOU Qualifications

Completion of an electrical construction apprentice program or holder of a valid state electrician license/certification or 4 years field experience as a journeyman electrician, or equivalent combination of education and experience

Revit experience and detailed understanding of its processing including setting up and maintaining jobs, files, families, schedules and work sets

Experience in 4D modeling

Minimum 5 years of experience in construction planning, detailing, or BIM coordination

Minimum 5 years of experience in the electrical construction industry

Preferred Education

High school diploma or GED

Degree in Construction Management, Design, Engineering, Planning, or similar discipline; combination of relevant education and experience considered in lieu of degree

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

Advanced knowledge of electrical systems construction and maintenance

Proficiency with BIM software (Revit, Navisworks, AutoCAD) and spool drawing production

Working level knowledge and understanding of construction drawings, installation methods, and prefab workflows

Solid knowledge of standard products, assemblies, and industry best practices

Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills

Ability to analyze drawings and specifications and recommend constructability improvements

Solid knowledge of electric system components and construction

Knowledge of NEC electrical codes

WHAT WE OFFER Compensation & Benefits

Salary $100,000-$125,000 / year

Commensurate with experience, paid weekly. Posted salary ranges are made in good faith. MYR Group reserves the right to adjust ranges depending on the qualifications of the selected candidate.
