High Voltage Distribution Specialist

Job Overview
Support Electric Distribution Systems (EDS) in distribution of electricity to buildings on the University campus and UNC Hospitals. Work directly under skilled power technicians. Engage in preventive maintenance for underground and overhead distribution systems and assist high voltage specialists in maintaining and/or replacing electrical equipment such as transformers, switches, light poles and more.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Some positions may require special licenses or certification. Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ability to follow directions.
Basic knowledge/experience of electricity (commercial and/or residential).
Demonstrated mechanical ability in using tools (hand tools, etc.) and/or power equipment (forklift, etc.).
Valid NC Driver’s License – opportunity to acquire NC Commercial Driver’s License is possible for qualified candidates.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Ability to read and interpret complex schematic drawings/blueprints on systems and/or equipment.
Ability to follow directions.
Demonstrated knowledge/experience of the electrical trade (commercial and/or residential).
Ability to use tools specific to the electrical trade.
Ability to demonstrate working knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in maintenance of commercial and/or residential electrical systems.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements This position will spend much time outdoors. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time; navigate stairs; climb ladders; work in small tight spaces and bend, stoop, crawl and squat to complete work; work at heights above 120 feet; good depth perception; move up to 50 lbs.; wear required PPE; work in stressful conditions; under critical timelines. All duties can be performed with or without reasonable accommodation. With training – ability to operate forklift, backhoe, truck-mounted skid steers, crane, machine shop tools (saws, drill presses, bucket truck lifts, cable splicing tools, etc.).
