Travelers is seeking a Director, Architecture to join our organization as we grow and transform our Enterprise Technology Solutions organization. Our architects are responsible for designing and guiding the technology vision that enables business transformation, specializing in creating enterprise‑wide solutions that bridge current capabilities with future possibilities. This strategic position requires expertise in cloud‑native technologies, APIs, AI/ML, and emerging platforms to establish scalable architectures where business applications can evolve and thrive. The ideal candidate orchestrates the technical strategy that empowers development teams—defining target states, creating technology roadmaps, and establishing architectural frameworks that accelerate innovation while maintaining standards and governance. The role directly impacts organizational agility, system integration, and the enterprise’s ability to rapidly adapt and scale technology solutions across the business landscape.
What Will You Do?
- Lead an architecture team within the Bond and Specialty Insurance division.
- Define and execute the strategic architecture roadmap for platform modernization of Management Liability and Cyber products.
- Drive a cohesive domain architecture and integration strategy (for APIs, Events, Agents) across Product, Underwriting and Pricing domains.
- Define target state technology architecture and roadmaps.
- Ensure alignment of initiatives with target state, enterprise standards, and business objectives.
- Identify opportunities to capitalize on technology advances through analysis of key industry and technology trends to assess potential impact on the enterprise.
- Define and lead technology proof of concepts to ensure feasibility of new technology architecture solutions.
- Drive continuous technology modernization to minimize technical debt.
- Collaborate with Technology and Business leadership to develop architecture priorities and direction to enable business imperatives.
- Optimize talent strategy to ensure proper mix of resources; proactively attract, develop, engage and retain high‑performing talent. Set clear goals, provide ongoing feedback and hold talent accountable. Promptly address performance issues.
- Ensure proper alignment of team skills with technology direction and execution of proofs of technology.
- Deliver communications to convey architectural direction.
- Drive strategic relationships and champion buy‑in.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
- Technical Expertise & Education: Bachelor’s in technology‑related field or equivalent, with 6 to 8 years of architecture experience.
- Strong architecture and recent hands‑on engineering experience with modern technologies such as Guidewire, AWS Cloud and micro‑service–based architecture.
- Successfully architected large‑scale technology initiatives.
- Leadership & Influence: Proven ability to influence executive and organizational decisions; experience mentoring architects and engineers; leading and managing technology teams to achieve strategic outcomes. Demonstrated ability to align team goals with broader mission while balancing long‑term planning with day‑to‑day operations.
- Strategic & Business Acumen: Extensive experience working in an agile operational model; supporting transformational change; adjusting plans, priorities, and strategies in response to changing circumstances.
- Insurance technology experience preferred.
- Understanding of value creation and business capability models.
- Strong knowledge of the insurance industry.
- Experience identifying and analyzing current/future problems and opportunities, evaluating information to understand root causes, and exploring alternative solutions for effective decision‑making.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively with colleagues to achieve mutually responsible results.
- Experience exercising sound judgment, making decisions, and committing to a position.
- Strong verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
What Is a Must Have?
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, related STEM field, or equivalent in education and/or work experience.
- 6 additional years of architecture/software engineering experience.
