The field underwriting team is growing! These three opportunities will be based in California, with territories to be divided accordingly. This position will be accountable for profitable Small Commercial new business growth for assigned agencies within their local geography and will report to the Small Commercial Underwriting Director responsible for the Western Field Underwriting team. Candidates must reside in California and will be required to travel weekly, typically within a 3–5 hour radius to meet with agency partners. A company vehicle will be provided. Key Responsibilities
Advanced Underwriting Execution: Independently underwrites and prices the most complex and specialized commercial risks within expanded authority levels while promoting a steady flow of lower-premium and complexity new business. Risk Analysis & Technical Consultation: Performs in-depth risk analysis using financials, loss control reports, industry trends, and predictive data models and provides consultative guidance to field underwriters and agents on risk mitigation and coverage solutions. Territory Management: Manages a field underwriting territory focused on new business production, identifying trends and recommending adjustments to underwriting approach or appetite. Agency Engagement & Strategic Support: Builds and maintains strong relationships with key agency partners, conducting in-person meetings, embedding and quoting within the agency’s office, and providing expert-level support in complex negotiations and coverage discussions. Market Intelligence & Innovation: Monitors market developments, emerging risks, and competitor activity and contributes feedback to the Portfolio Management and Technical Underwriting organizations to influence the evolution of underwriting guidelines, tools, and practices. Mentorship & Knowledge Sharing: Serves as a technical resource and informal mentor to field underwriters, sharing best practices and supporting skill development across the team. Program & Product Expertise: Partners with Territory Managers and Learning & Development resources to conduct product orientation and training sessions for agents and internal teams. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required. Minimum 6–8 years of commercial underwriting experience, with demonstrated success in handling complex risks and portfolios. Advanced insurance designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM) strongly preferred. California experience a plus. Expert-level understanding of commercial underwriting principles, risk management, and industry-specific exposures. Strong knowledge of agency operations and market dynamics. Exceptional analytical, consultative, and communication skills. Job Conditions
Overtime Eligibility: Not Eligible (Exempt) Requires regular travel in the field to service centers, agency offices, and customer business locations. Must have and maintain a safe driving record. Must be able to stoop, bend, and climb ladders in performing inspections. Benefits
