Job Summary The Core Tax Services Senior Manager advises clients on tax implications, selects alternative actions to reduce compliance costs, and serves as the primary contact for complex tax issues. The role requires applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, communicating risks, and making top‑level decisions regarding filing, preparation, and resolution of questions from federal and state agencies. The manager is a critical member of the office/region leadership team, participates in marketing, networking, and business development, and maintains client relationships.
Job Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensures clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax burdens and meeting firm policies.
Conducts top‑level review of tax issues and resolves client tax issues, involving specialists where appropriate.
Plans early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate.
Research
Identifies when research is needed, frames issues, and reports analysis concisely.
Provides research methodology for efficient research process and trains managers/staff on research skills.
ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Applies firm policies and standards regarding ASC 740, reviews tax provisions, and explains complex ASC 740 issues to clients.
Helps others learn and apply ASC 740 requirements.
Tax Consulting
Develops, recommends, and implements efficient methods to maximize client benefits and decrease taxes.
Monitors implementation of work plans, manages client expectations, and provides assistance with agency inquiries.
Tax Specialization
Develops an in‑depth understanding of technical and practical issues in taxation, including pass‑through, state/local, international, and transfer pricing.
May organize and conduct external CPE training sessions and mentor associates on specialization areas.
Strategy Development
Introduces and develops new or improved ideas to improve client, firm, or personnel positions.
Researches and implements tax strategies and presents complex strategies to clients and prospective clients.
Other duties as required
Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects.
Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments.
Trains associates and seniors on current software tools.
Acts as a career advisor to associates and senior associates.
Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates.
Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates.
Education
Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bachelor's degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, or Statistics preferred.
Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred.
Experience
Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting, or consulting/professional services experience required.
Industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred.
Prior supervisory experience required.
License/Certifications
CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or Internal Revenue Service Enrolled Agent (“EA”) required.
Possession of other professional degrees or certifications applicable to role preferred.
Software
Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred.
