Summary
The Retirement Benefit Specialist calculates retirement benefit estimates, processes applications, communicates with members, reports to the Board of Trustees, balances the monthly ledger, and processes pension checks. Performs customer service functions.
Pension Coordinator Responsibilities
Calculate retirement benefit estimates, process applications, communicate with members, prepare reports for the Board of Trustees, balance the monthly ledger, and process pension checks.
Answer overflow calls from Retirement Services Representatives and more complicated participant inquiries and requests via incoming phone calls as needed.
Enter data for new applications and update member demographics.
Determine eligibility for and calculate monthly benefits of participants based upon a thorough understanding of complex Plan provisions.
Communicate clearly with participants, both verbally and through written communications.
Prepare meeting reports for the Board of Trustees.
Balance monthly ledger, process monthly pension checks, and print manual checks.
Review monthly and yearly exception reports.
Coordinate with the Programming to implement plan changes and conduct month and year end processes.
Update changes in benefit status and amounts for participants.
Create and maintain fund‑specific procedural manuals.
Follow established procedures in a thorough and consistent manner.
Ability to work independently with minimal assistance and supervision.
Ability to work in an organized manner.
Must be detail‑oriented and able to multi‑task.
Ability to handle a variety of callers in a pleasant, respectful, patient, and efficient manner.
Perform customer service functions as needed.
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of this job.
Pension Coordinator Qualifications
High School diploma or GED equivalent.
Some college with math, accounting, or finance courses and/or job‑related experience a plus.
Experience with defined benefit, defined contribution or 401(k) plans is a plus.
Familiarity with ERISA, REA, PPA and DOL/IRS Code and regulations directly related to job duties is a plus.
Ability to comprehend written materials such as plan documents and legal correspondence.
Ability to communicate professionally, tactfully, and clearly with participants, fellow employees, and other professionals.
Ability to apply concepts of basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and algebra. Must be able to understand and apply knowledge of decimals, fractions, and percentages.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, especially Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Excellent customer service skills are a must.
Work Schedule Full time. Monday - Friday, 7:30am - 4:30pm. Required in office (no at‑home days).
