This role will be based out of one of the following Zurich offices: Chicago IL, Schaumburg IL, Edina MN, Independence OH, Pittsburgh, Kansas City STL, Wisconsin Virtual, or Michigan Virtual.

Role Overview As a Complex Property Underwriter, you will handle complex new and renewal Middle Markets property business. You will apply and hone your property underwriting and marketing skills while building relationships with Select Brokers in the Midwest region.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as a customer industry advocate focused on improving the customer experience by understanding their risk and offering the best end‑to‑end solution for their insurance needs.

Use a disciplined approach to exposure evaluation, risk assessment and pricing.

Leverage risk insights, data, and models to drive informed decisions at point of sale.

Identify gaps and align Zurich’s products and value proposition to provide contract certainty the customer needs.

Demonstrate strong analytical skills and execute as an innovative advisor.

Underwrite, analyze, and generate new and renewal business.

Maintain a market‑facing presence and production within the growing Middle Markets property division.

Administer and monitor underwriting rules and guidelines, insurance laws, regulations, and rating manual rules.

Develop and maintain agency and broker relationships.

Work within broad limits and authorities on highly complex assignments.

Basic Qualifications Underwriting Specialist

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 3+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 8+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.

Executive Underwriter

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 7+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.

High School Diploma or Equivalent and 14+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 5+ years of experience in underwriting or market‑facing area.

Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an associate degree and 12+ years of experience in claims or underwriting support area.

Experience with Microsoft Office.

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree.

Market‑facing, property underwriting experience.

3+ years of underwriting experience in Middle Market or larger.

Ability to effectively assess risk.

Strong negotiation and relationship‑building skills.

Strong retail broker relationships.

Superior skills in active listening, needs analysis, and win‑win negotiating.

Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.

Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines.

Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills reflecting progression of positions of increasing responsibility.

CPCU and ARM a plus.

Compensation Your pay at Zurich is based on your role, location, skills, and experience. The combined salary range for this position is $74,300 – $161,000. The Underwriting Specialist range is $74,300 – $121,700, with short‑term incentive bonus eligibility of 10%. The Executive Underwriter range is $98,300 – $161,000, with short‑term incentive bonus eligibility of 15%.
