Summary The National Chavez Center's Educational and Cultural Programming Department is a growing department in charge of overseeing the public presentation and interpretation of the legacy of Cesar and Helen Chavez. The National Chavez Center Educational and Cultural Programming team aims to create lasting connections with students, guests, and stakeholders, to connect resources to the community, and the community to resources, and to lead the organization’s efforts to make Cesar and Helen’s legacy public and accessible. The Educational and Cultural Programming Department is seeking an Education and Community Engagement Specialist to support the growing educational operations of our institution. The Education and Community Engagement Specialist will assist in planning, connecting, presenting, revising, and distributing our educational and cultural programs with the community at large. This role will have a heavy emphasis on community outreach and public tours.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Community Outreach: Lead the organization’s efforts to connect with passionate community members. Lead the recruitment efforts to connect these individuals to volunteer opportunities, and oversee all scheduling and task-assignments in conjunctions with the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument.

Museum Services: Support staff at the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument and the National Chavez Center in their daily work to operate the Visitor Center. Tasks include, but are not limited to: opening and closing the Visitor Center, leading tours, communicating with guests (in person and via phone), processing store transactions, cleaning, and communicating any observations with appropriate staff.

Tours: Help to coordinate and lead tours of the Visitor Center and the La Paz property to school groups, individuals, or partner organizations.

Cultural Programming: Event support or leadership in shared planning of educational and cultural public-facing events, including commemorations, cultural celebrations, community group requests, nature-walks, or yoga classes.

Administrative and Digital Support: Perform clerical tasks such as filing, scanning, and labeling. Assist with inventory management and preparation of reports. Assist with supporting social media efforts for the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument and staff.

Event Support: Assisting the rest of the National Chavez Center for large event logistics including setting up of tables and chairs, conducting tours, cleaning, and communicating with students or organizers.

Compliance: Adhere to legal and institutional policies related to records management and data protection.

Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Education, History, Liberal Studies, or a related field preferred.

Experience: Previous experience working in parks, museums, libraries, or a similar setting is encouraged.

Work Environment

Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and carry archival materials (up to 50 lbs) and perform tasks involving standing, bending, reaching, and carrying items for extended distances.

Work Conditions: Typical office environment with occasional need to work in storage areas. May involve working with materials that require special handling.
