Position Summary

The Assistant Maintenance Leader is responsible for providing leadership within the Maintenance Department in the Baking facility, ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and sanitation. This role supports the Maintenance Department Leader by assisting to lead the team of mechanics, overseeing mid‑size capital projects, and ensuring smooth operation of the preventative maintenance program.

Key Job Responsibilities

Execute the Bakery’s preventive and predictive maintenance programs to ensure reliable operational performance of bakery equipment and processes.

Plan, organize, direct, and control the work performed by Mechanics utilizing the plant’s PM program.

Provide coverage in the absence of the Maintenance Department Leader and technical support for controls, electrical, and mechanical systems and equipment.

Manage and improve all components and software required to efficiently operate a primarily automated manufacturing line.

Monitor Maintenance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and PM system reports, using these reports to initiate remedial actions to improve maintenance performance.

Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications and standards, ensure compliance with governmental requirements (OSHA, EPA, FDA), and verify completion of maintenance procedures in line with company policies.

Requisition tools, equipment, and supplies necessary for maintenance activities.

Ensure maintenance personnel are trained on Lock‑Out / Tag‑Out, Confined Space, Hazard Material Handling, and Personal Protective Equipment.

Perform tasks that require standing for long periods, climbing, reaching above shoulders, walking, lifting, grasping, kneeling, bending, and twisting. Must ascend and descend building stairways, ladders, and ramps.

Undertake special assignments on a case‑by‑case basis and perform all other related tasks, including assisting and training other associates as required by supervision.

Think strategically about maintenance needs, set data‑based priorities, and build plans with the Mechanics team to achieve improved maintenance KPIs.

Set the Standard:

Support the Maintenance Department Leader in achieving maintenance standards and practices, equipment reliability, safety, quality, environmental compliance, and productivity for the bakery location. Knowledge of safety and environmental concepts and compliance with State, Federal, and Local regulations is required. Travel up to 10% of the time.

Support and develop individuals for greater responsibility, provide sound advice to executive leadership, and be a member of the bakery leadership team.

Education And Work History

Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required. A technical degree in a related field or AIB Maintenance Correspondence Course is a plus.

Minimum of 5 years of maintenance supervisory experience, ideally in a fresh baked goods, bread, and muffin or food manufacturing facility, or other process manufacturing environment.

Strong communication, leadership, and team‑building skills, with a strong PLC knowledge base being a plus. Experience in electrical circuitry, bread and roll production equipment repair, refrigeration, and fuel‑burning equipment is essential.

Must be computer literate and have a proven ability to build, develop, and lead teams.

Ability to identify various parts and read mechanical and electrical drawings, instructions, gauges, meters, etc.
