Purpose of the Position The conductor is a foundational role within the railway operating under the union agreement. Conductors work as part of a train crew, assisting in switching rail cars, assembling or disassembling trains in rail yards, or moving rail cars between yards. The position requires vigilance for safety, unscheduled shift work, extended periods away from home, and outdoor work in all types of weather.
Position Requirements
Can perform physically demanding work, such as walking up to 6 miles a day on uneven ground, climbing, and lifting or pulling heavy objects (up to 80 pounds on occasion).
Willingness to work unscheduled shifts in a 24/7 operating environment.
Ability to work up to 12‑hour shifts, including days, evenings, overnight, weekends, and holidays.
Can report to work within a two‑hour call window after scheduled rest.
Excellent focus, attention to detail, and ability to multitask.
Strong communication skills, including clear and concise instructions over radio.
Comfortable working outdoors in all types of weather for long periods.
Must pass required physical job tasks, written examinations, read/understand safety instructions, operating rules, and other written or printed material in English.
Must be at least 18 years old.
High school diploma or general equivalency.
Valid driver’s license.
Valid United States passport, passcard, or enhanced driver’s license; allows entry/re‑entry to Canada.
Position Accountabilities
Work in train or yard service depending on seniority.
Carry out specific instructions detailing a train’s route and movements.
Coordinate switching of cars, including coupling/uncoupling and lifting out coupling devices.
Observe, interpret, and relay signals and indications affecting train movement.
Signal crew members for movement of the engine or train using specific signals or radio for start, stop, back‑up, set/release air brakes.
Maintain thorough understanding of and follow General Code of Operating Rules (GCOR), general orders, and bulletins.
Provide flag protection and relay signals to trains in emergencies.
Move on and off moving or stationary equipment.
Fill out forms, including train orders and switch lists, and prepare clear, legible reports.
Handle emergency situations, operate fire extinguishers, and perform first‑aid techniques.

Training Program CPKC provides 15 weeks of paid in‑class and field training, covering safety practices, rules, and operations. During classroom training you earn $203.96 per day; on‑the‑job training pays $25.49 per hour. The average conductor earns approximately $81,000 annually, with potential to earn up to $107,000.
Pre‑Employment Requirements Medical & Drug Testing – A safety‑critical position requires a successful pre‑employment medical assessment (physical, vision, hearing) and a negative company or regulated drug test. Post‑hire drug testing may also be required.
