The Underground Locator plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and integrity of underground utility infrastructure during construction and excavation activities. The role includes locating utilities, placing conduit and cables in trenches, splicing conduit sections, installing couplers, placing anchors, pedestals, and vaults, and completing construction tasks.
Responsibilities
Identify and mark the location of underground utilities such as water, gas, electric, and telecommunications lines using magnetic, radar, and electrical devices.
Operate excavation equipment, including backhoe, trencher, and hydro-vac.
Walk and confirm bore path, spot utilities, and ensure proper clearances to install the product per standards.
Record the depth of the tool head as required.
Ensure the drill head is properly positioned at the exit pit to connect the product.
Oversee laborers’ and/or crew members’ work and monitor time usage.
Place conduit and/or cables in trenches, splice conduit sections, and install couplers as directed.
Hand‑dig with shovels, picks, and digging bars to expose located utilities and access underground vaults and pedestals.
Operate tamps, jackhammers, core drills, concrete saws, and other miscellaneous equipment safely.
Requirements
High school diploma or equivalent.
At least two years of experience in a similar role.
On‑the‑job training will be provided.
Must be available to work long periods, including evenings and weekends when necessary.
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to handle or feet.
Ability to reach with hands and arms, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl.
Ability to lift up to 75 lbs as needed.
Ability to maintain all safety expectations and work outdoors for extended periods.
Exposed to extreme weather conditions; must operate machinery in all weather conditions and terrains.
Must be able to work at heights and/or in confined spaces.
