Associate Director, Foundation Relations The American Museum of Natural History is a world‑leading scientific and cultural institution dedicated to discovering, interpreting, and disseminating knowledge about human cultures, the natural world, and the universe through research, education, and exhibitions.

Overview The Associate Director, Foundation Relations plays a key role in advancing the Museum’s foundation fundraising, providing leadership and strategic direction to expand the current portfolio of foundation donors. This professional will manage a significant portfolio of foundation donors and prospects, collaborate with museum colleagues, and develop proposals, reports, and budgets.

Responsibilities

Partner with the Director of Foundation Relations to develop and execute the team’s annual goals and strategic plan to grow foundation support.

Manage a portfolio of high‑level existing foundation funders and identify new prospects through analysis of alignment with Museum priorities, funding capacity, and engagement potential.

Develop and execute sophisticated, multi‑stage cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies, facilitate dialogue, build relationships between foundation funders and Museum staff, and orchestrate impactful site visits.

Stay current on trends in foundation funding, museum, scientific, and education fields.

Proposal & Content Development

Serve as lead writer for the team, drafting and editing high‑quality inquiries, proposals, reports, and correspondence.

Collaborate with scientists, educators, and program staff to brainstorm funding ideas, assess project concepts, and gather information for proposals.

Advise internal colleagues on funder priorities and guidelines to strengthen proposal content.

Collaborate on accurate budgets and timely financial reports for foundation submissions.

Team Collaboration & Operational Support

Partner with the Foundation Relations team, providing mentorship and sharing best practices.

Maintain comprehensive understanding of prospect management, grants calendar, and gift processing workflows.

Act as senior resource on grants management processes, liaising with Advancement Operations and Finance on grant agreements and reporting issues.

Staff periodic advancement events in evenings or weekends as needed.

Perform other duties as requested, delegated, or assigned.

Salary & Benefits Expected salary range: $95,000 – $115,000 annually. The AMNH offers an extensive benefits package designed to meet the needs of its dedicated and diverse community.

Required Qualifications

Advanced degree in relevant field (e.g., Museum Studies, Non‑Profit Management, Science, Journalism).

Experience fundraising for scientific research or educational programs.

Advanced knowledge of Raiser’s Edge or similar CRM (e.g., Salesforce).

Preferred Qualifications
