Job Description
Position Purpose: Under supervision, installs, maintains and repairs water mains, valves, pumps, hydrants and other water service equipment. Operates construction equipment such as backhoes, front‑end loaders, forklifts, pavers, motor graders, trench‑digging machines, landscaping and lawn mowing tractors, pumps, compressors and pneumatic tools; performs related work as required.
Primary Duties / Responsibilities
Operates equipment, drives utility vehicles, installs, maintains, and repairs water mains, pipes, valves, pumps, hydrants, and other equipment.
Sees that water taps and cut are performed and closed in work areas.
Sets drilling machines and taps water mains to the size required, places needed sleeves, sets valves, disassembles fire hydrants, removes defective parts, installs new parts and reassembles hydrants. Replaces water valves, operates an air compressor and pneumatic drill.
Digs trenches to remove defective pipes and to install new pipes, and mains; yarns and pours, and caulks joints; loads and unloads pipes and fittings; obtains, safeguards, and uses needed equipment, tools, materials and supplies.
Excavates and backfills trenches and culverts, installs, repairs, and replaces water and sewer mains, joins and caulks pipeline, repairs valves and hydrants, drills and installs taps in mains, and performs related street repairs, working from land plats, maps, and other diagrams.
Conducts grounds keeping and landscaping functions including brush cutting, grubbing and trash/debris removal from work areas. Operates commercial‑grade lawn mowers and various landscaping tools. Operates snowplowing equipment. Operates a chain saw, completes fence repairs, and when directed collects and delivers system samples as needed.
Must participate in emergency stand‑by rotation and must respond to the yard within forty‑five minutes of notification, excluding Water Treatment Plant.
Performs similar or less skilled work as assigned.
Assists employees of a higher classification as assigned.
Qualifications Education / Experience / Background: High School Diploma/GED is required.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Some knowledge of proper procedures used in making a complex repair to water mains, pipes, and appurtenances of varied types of tools used in the maintenance and repair of water installations and of the proper use of these tools.
Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position.
Ability to operate a 90‑lb jackhammer.
Ability to understand, remember, and carry out oral and written directions to learn quickly from oral and written explanations and from demonstrations.
In emergency situations, must be able to remain on the job until all repairs have been made and to operate an air compressor skillfully and other specialized tools and equipment.
Physical Requirements Ability to lift 50 pounds.
Pay Rate $25.64 per hour.
