Definition To participate as a member of a crew responsible for the performance of a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled manual tasks in golf course turf maintenance, course set‑up, irrigation, operating golf course equipment and hand tools.
Distinguishing Characteristics This is the entry‑level class distinguished by the performance of the more routine tasks and duties assigned to positions within the division. Since this class is an entry‑level class, employees may have only limited or no directly related work experience.
Supervision
Receives immediate supervision from the Superintendent.
Exercises supervision of seasonal labor.
Essential Functions
Maintain grounds and buildings at city golf course: rake bunkers, mow tees, fairways and roughs, maintain driving range.
Repair irrigation; trim and care for trees and shrubs; water plants and grass.
Assist in monitoring greens for stress and knowledge of necessary steps to prevent damage to greens.
Participate in daily setup for play.
Responsible for daily course appearance.
Apply growth enhancers and disease inhibitors to greens and tees.
Excavate and backfill ditches and trenches with hand tools.
Perform regular maintenance testing of equipment and machinery to maintain quality assurance and high performance (check oil, fuel, water).
Operate various equipment such as mowers, tractors, weedeaters as assigned to accomplish duties.
Repair and maintain golf course equipment including city‑owned golf carts.
Communicate and interface with co‑workers and the public.
Self‑initiate activities consistent with department goals and objectives.
Marginal Functions
Assist in construction and/or maintenance of facilities and buildings.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.
Knowledge
Basic operational characteristics of equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
Occupational hazards and safety practices.
Pertinent Federal, State and Local laws, codes and regulations.
Abilities
Learn to perform unskilled and semi‑skilled tasks related to municipal facilities.
Learn to operate a variety of vehicular and stationary mechanical equipment in a safe and effective manner.
Interpret and apply Federal, State and local policies, laws and regulations.
Follow all safety rules and regulations of the Public Service Department.
Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain a cooperative working relationship with those contacted in the course of work.
Maintain physical condition appropriate to the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
Physical Requirements
Walking, standing or sitting for extended periods of time.
Lifting and/or carrying moderate to heavy objects, up to 50 pounds, frequently.
Performing heavy manual labor.
Operate golf course maintenance equipment.
Climbing ladders.
Conducting inspections.
Bending, stooping or kneeling for extended periods of time.
Mental Capabilities
