Assistant Director Of Payroll
Salary: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 Annually Location: Honolulu, Hawaii Job Type: Staff - Regular Full Time Exempt Hawai'i Pacific University is designated as an Alaskan Native and Native Hawaiian (ANNH) Serving Institution by the US Department of Education. Job Summary: Under the guidance of the VP of Human Resources, the Assistant Director of Payroll is responsible for the oversight and management of payroll services for HPU's divisions, supervising staff, and leading payroll activities with various HPU departments and multiple state entities. This position maintains payroll and accounting records that require specialized calculations, reconciliations, and the preparation of correcting or adjusting entries. It is also responsible for registering payroll, unemployment, and workers' compensation accounts in each applicable state and municipality. The Assistant Director of Payroll designs and maintains internal controls for all payroll processing, reporting, and recordkeeping within the ERP HR/Payroll system. The role also prepares payroll-related tax withholdings and filings, audits payroll records for accuracy, and assists with special projects as assigned. Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Management, Human Resources or other related field. In lieu of a bachelor's degree, an associate's Degree with at least ten (10) years of related payroll/HRIS experience and general ledger (GL) accounting. Five (5) years of experience with computerized ERP HR/Payroll system; ability to troubleshoot ERP HR/Payroll system issues. Intermediate understanding and proficiency in Microsoft Office, Word, and Outlook. Proficiency in Excel to manipulate data to audit payroll and provide reports. Two (2) years of supervisory/management experience. Desired Qualifications: American Payroll Association Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) or other related professional certification. Multi-state payroll experience. Proven ability to interpret and apply complex federal and multi-state payroll laws and regulations, ensuring compliance for diverse employment categories within a higher education environment. Ellucian (Banner) Software experience. Five (5) years of supervisory/management experience. Ability to develop Ad Hoc Reports for payroll management and monitoring. Higher education experience working with adjunct pay and stipends. Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a fast paced and rapidly changing environment. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in written and oral forms with executive, senior management, faculty, staff, managers, technical staff, and external auditors and attorneys.
