Green Mountain Audubon Center Maple Sugaring Position
The Green Mountain Audubon Center in Huntington, Vermont provides conservation education for schools, families, adults, teachers and the public. The Center also offers a summer day camp program for children ages 3 to 13 with education programs that offer direct experiences in nature. Our programs are outdoors, science-based, interactive, and lead participants to take action to help protect birds, other wildlife and their habitats. The Center conducts scientific research in the form of avian monitoring and is a bird-friendly, land management demonstration site. We have a working, education-based sugarbush that produces between 75 and 100 gallons of bird-friendly syrup each year. Thousands of people visit the sugaring operation annually to learn about bird-friendly maple syrup production. Length of Assignment: February 9, 2026 - April 17, 2026 Hours: Approximately 21 hours per week Location: This is an on-site position based out of Audubon Vermont State Office-Green Mountain Center in Huntington, Vermont. Essential Functions
Partner with the Maple Sugaring Assistants, ensuring efficient systems for sap gathering, wood stacking, and boiling throughout the season. Coordinate sugarbush preparation and tapping, including bucket distribution, record keeping, and providing clear guidance to volunteers assisting with tapping. Prepare and maintain the sugarhouse for safe operations by cleaning pans, assembling equipment, managing firewood, conducting safety checks, and keeping the space clean and presentable. Set sap-gathering schedules and communicate regularly with assistants and volunteers, providing advance notice whenever possible. Manage end-of-season tasks, including gathering buckets, washing and storing equipment, and ensuring the sugarhouse is fully cleaned and properly closed. Engage volunteers, students, and visitors, ensuring safety while demonstrating the sugaring process and answering questions for both groups and the public. Staff the sugarhouse during Sugar-on-Snow Parties and demonstrate the sugaring process during Vermonts Maple Open House Weekend. Safely operate and maintain the tractor, including routine fluid checks. Maintain accurate records of syrup production and inventory, and document supply needs for future seasons. Support end-of-season disassembly of sugarhouse equipment and maintain cooperative working relationships with all Audubon staff; perform other sugaring-related duties as assigned. Qualifications and Experience
A minimum of two years of maple sugaring experience. Commitment to Audubons organizational values of care, collaboration, change, integrity, impact, and innovation. Demonstrated personal and professional commitment to and experience in advancing equity, diversity, inclusion, and belonging. A valid drivers license to operate Audubon vehicles.
