A Brief Summary Of This Position This position serves as Valmont’s EHS Specialist, enabling overall company strategy in driving continuous improvement with EHS best practices. The role requires initiative on special projects, participation in site-level EHS teams, and implementation of Valmont’s EHS Playbook. The Specialist aligns site EHS activities with enterprise-wide strategies, detects sub-standard performance, and takes corrective action with appropriate leadership. The role interacts with site production employees to identify and control hazards, assisting others in their growth and knowledge of Safety, Health & Environmental practices.
Essential Functions
Reports directly to the Plant Manager, with matrixed reporting to the Regional Safety Manager and has no direct or indirect reports.
Supports development, maintenance, and continuous improvement efforts to facilitate EHS strategic initiatives.
Partners with regional and site management to ensure consistent deployment of standards, campaigns and initiatives across the organization.
Supports the development and implementation of the site‑specific annual EHS goals to measurably reduce risks and impacts.
Will learn and gain expertise in the company’s EHS information management system to manage data related to EHS events such as injuries, workers compensation claims, near‑miss incidents and internal and external inspections, and environmental permits.
Assists in conducting the risk assessment process to recognize, evaluate, and control hazards throughout the site.
Participates in and facilitates the deployment of environment, health and safety teams (e.g., Safety Committee) and facilitates their engagement in ownership of the activities required to maintain compliance, reduce the site’s environmental footprint and drive continuous improvement.
Assists the team‑based incident investigation process to help identify appropriate root cause and helps facilitate corrective action measures.
Collects data for reporting and permit submittals for multi‑media environmental regulatory requirements.
Successful completion of the Valmont EHS Specialist curriculum within three months of hire.

Serves as a liaison between regional and site management, risk management and human resources on applicable topics.
Assists in the development and implementation of emergency management and business continuity programs.
Supports serious post‑incident reviews at their site, communication of incidents that result or have the potential to result in serious injury; partners with Regional EHS Directors/Managers and site representatives to identify root causes and preventive actions are effectively deployed across the organization.
Assists with training/mentoring to regional/site representatives to strengthen EHS compliance and best practices.
Formulates and implements actions on various EHS topics, as necessary, and shares updates with leadership.
Facilitates the implementation of training programs to ensure regulatory compliance and incident best practices.
Stays current with EHS property conservation regulations and standards.
Demonstrates a commitment to the Valmont Core Values.
Required Qualifications of Every Candidate (Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities)
Preferred Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree with 3 years of EHS or related experience, or 5 years of experience of EHS or related experience.
EHS responsibility with an emphasis on implementation and maintenance of environmental, health and safety programs, fire prevention, sustainability and risk management.
Track record of making effective decisions, even when dealing with limited or ambiguous information.
Ability to lead or support corporate, division, business unit and site teams responsible for managing EHS risks.
Highly Qualified Candidates Will Also Possess These Qualifications
Previous experience with multi‑national companies with progressive EHS programs
Experience with OSHA Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP) or ISO 45001, 14001 desired
Prior experience implementing and/or maintaining an enterprise‑wide database system
Experience in a similar heavy manufacturing industry
Working Environment and Physical Efforts The primary working conditions for this position are a manufacturing shop environment with exposure to dirt, grease, fumes, cold, heat, noise and dust. At times the EHS Specialist works in an office environment. Personal Protective Equipment such as safety glasses and hard hats may be required in most manufacturing areas. The Specialist must ensure that all people (employees, vendors, customers, visitors) are in conformance with all safety requirements and that all employees enforce the safety requirements consistently and without exception. The incumbent is regularly required to sit for extended periods of time, talk and listen on the phone and in personal conversations or meetings. Environment is fast paced and demanding most of the time. The employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms while working in the office with various files and forms and while working on the computer. The employee is occasionally required to move about the office. Incumbent must utilize proper ergonomic safeguards such as monitor height and position, keyboard location and height and proper wrist rests. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
