Underwriter - Ocean Marine
QBE North America invites applications for an Underwriter - Ocean Marine role, located in Houston, TX with a hybrid work arrangement. The Opportunity
This role supports assigned line(s) of business strategy by evaluating risk and underwriting profitable business within authorized limits. You will communicate with agents, apply sound decision‑making, and ensure compliance with regulations and company policy. Primary Responsibilities
Review, evaluate and price business by applying underwriting judgment and adhering to company policy and state regulations within established authority. Underwrite insurance risks in accordance with the business plan and personal authority to meet objectives, including negotiating rates, terms, and conditions for new and existing business, managing production and issue of contract documentation, and ensuring regulatory compliance. Participate in portfolio review and analysis to identify improvement opportunities and progress toward profitable objectives. Enter data promptly and accurately in underwriting systems for both underwriting and aggregate exposures. Research and obtain market intelligence to enhance profit goals. Adhere to underwriting standards, instructions, good practice, and legal/regulatory requirements to minimize risk. Contribute to recording and measurement of insurance risks ensuring accuracy and best practice. Escalate complex issues to senior underwriting professionals for guidance. Assume special projects such as audits and process improvement initiatives. Required Education
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and work experience. Required Experience
3 years relevant experience in underwriting. Preferred Competencies / Skills
Attention to detail and thorough task completion. Analytical problem‑solving using data. Sound judgment for decision making. Understanding and improving underwriting technical systems. Negotiation skills for settlement with minimal friction. Strong communication skills across audiences. Responsibility and independence with timely goal achievement. Preferred Education Specifics
Degree in Business, Insurance, or related field. Preferred Experience
Insurance industry experience. Preferred Licenses / Certifications
Adapted to the assigned line(s) of business. Preferred Knowledge
Working knowledge of insurance products and concepts. Microsoft Office proficiency. Understanding of underwriting processes and procedures. Familiarity with laws and regulations in the area of responsibility. Knowledge of risk profiling, pricing tools and loss models. Business acumen and industry trend awareness. Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $88,000–$132,000. Additional compensation may bonus, 401(k) with company match up to 8%, paid leave, well‑being program, tuition reimbursement, employee networks, and hybrid work arrangement. Equal Employment Opportunity
