The Media Relations Manager plays an integral role in building and advancing BILH’s reputation as an organization committed to the communities it serves, as well as to leadership in clinical care, research and education. Through effective engagement with the news media, the Media Relations Manager is responsible for developing strategies to engage the media proactively, as well as responding to inquiries from the press. This individual will be responsible for media relations for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, BILH Research & Education, and Joslin Diabetes Center.
Primary responsibilities include representing assigned hospitals and/or business units and serving as the primary point of contact for the news media on behalf of these entities. Builds positive relationships with hospital and/or business leaders, clinicians and staff in order to inform and engage local initiatives, innovations and discoveries that may be of interest to the press.
Ensures assigned hospital and/or clinical unit media relations efforts are closely aligned with system-wide media relations initiatives, as well as local and system-level internal communications, marketing, web and social media activities. Must also be comfortable educating and engaging senior leaders, physicians and employees on media relations policies and strategies.
Essential Responsibilities
- Developing and implementing proactive media relations strategies designed to strengthen the reputation of assigned hospitals and/or clinical units.
- Collaborating with leadership to identify opportunities for media engagement. Aligning and prioritizing media strategy in the context of the mission and business strategy of the system and assigned units.
- Continuously evaluating the effectiveness of media strategies and adapting accordingly.
- Developing and maintaining relationships with local, regional, and national media outlets. Proactively pitching stories to favorably position units and establish BILH as a go‑to resource for expert commentary.
- Writing press releases, media advisories, opinion pieces, and letters to the editor on behalf of units.
- In close collaboration with the Director of Media Relations and others, managing crises or adverse events to minimize negative reputational impact.
- Contributing positively and collaboratively to a client‑centric operating model that provides proactive and responsive service to leaders.
- Collaborating with Communications colleagues to ensure alignment and consistency across internal and external channels. Staying up‑to‑date on national trends and best practices in media relations and health care communications.
- Participating in the Communications team on‑call program.
- No direct or indirect reports. Holds authority to direct and support daily work activities and recommend employment actions: hiring, termination, corrective action, and performance reviews.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required.
5–8 years related experience in Media Relations and 0–1 year supervisory/management experience required.
Experience with computer systems, including web‑based applications and Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Access).
Preferred Qualifications
Healthcare experience.
Pay Range
$95,000.00 USD – $130,000.00 USD (annual base salary). Additional compensation may be based on seniority, education, training, relevant experience, certifications, geography, or other permissible factors.
